About this program

PGCE (Primary with Modern Languages)

This teacher training program will enable you to teach across the curriculum in two consecutive primary school age ranges, with either French, German or Spanish as a specialist subject.

  • As well as general teacher training, you’ll also receive specialist training inlanguage teaching at primary level. This will include topics such as language curriculum design, working with parentsto support language learning, bilingualism, how to teach languages in conjunction with other curricular areas,and how to help students transition their language learning from primary to secondary school.
  • You'll take part in a school placement where you'll teach French, German or Spanish alongside all other curriculum areas.The majority of placements are in London and offer an excellent introduction to teaching in socially mixed, multi-ethnic, urban classrooms. This experience is both exciting and challenging and will help you earn to reflect systematically and critically on your classroom performance.

  • to meet our fitness to train requirements
  • a GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English, Mathematics, and a Science subject (either Biology, Chemistry, Physics or combined Science) Please note, we can only accept some UK and international GCSE equivalent qualifications. A complete list of accepted UK GCSE equivalencies can be found here: link. If you have a non-UK qualification that you believe is GCSE equivalent, you must check this with the Admissions team.
  • an undergraduate honours degree, at 2:2 or above from a university in the United Kingdom or an international equivalent that includes an appropriate element of French, German, Spanish or Mandarin or an A-level (or equivalent) in French, German, Spanish or Mandarin (normally at Grade C or above).

You may also be accepted if you don't have a formal qualification, but can demonstrate the ability to communicate well in both spoken and written French, German, Spanish, or Mandarin.
