About this program

Fine Arts

In this program, students develop and foster creative and artistic ability in a variety of studio areas. Students are engaged and challenged to achieve their individual goals and objectives as artists within a variety of traditional and non-traditional media. Students experience both the practical and theoretical components of fine arts. Students gain professional and entrepreneurial skills for professional practice and self employment necessary to successfully operate within the various professions of fine art.

Admission requirements

OSSD or equivalent with

  • Grade 12 English (C or U)

Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older), and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED, and equivalency testing.

Applicants who have taken courses from a recognized and accredited post-secondary institution and/or have relevant life/learning experience may also be considered for admission.

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. explain the essential characteristics and properties of fine art media such as painting, printmaking, drawing, and sculpture;
  2. develop through extensive practice the technical control of a fine art media;
  3. apply knowledge of the elements of design, and other aesthetic considerations, to fine art media;
  4. apply appropriate learned design and technical skills to the production of art objects;
  5. operate a broad range of highly specialized, potentially dangerous studio equipment in the prescribed manner, and following established safety principles;
  6. identify toxic and hazardous materials and substances used and employ the recommended personal protection;
  7. estimate and measure quantities of time and materials used in production of one of-kind objects;
  8. estimate and measure quantities of time and materials used in production of multiple objects;
  9. prepare for the exhibition of their work in public galleries, displays, and shows;
  10. communicate design and technical information effectively, through the use of language and drawing skills;
  11. document work through the use of photographic skills;
  12. apply basic entrepreneurial strategies to identify and respond to new opportunities;
  13. employ library and research techniques to prepare for seminars and the creation of written documents;
  14. identify contemporary fine art issues, as well as current trends in the market;
  15. indicate sources of grants and government funding available to artisans;
  16. explain and appreciate the leadership role of organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies in support of the fine arts in society;
  17. apply creative problem solving and express ideas visually;
  18. work in ways that take into account the impact of artistic endeavors on our environment.

Career paths

A Fine Art education has inherent personal, cultural and critical value. A survey of the careers pursued by graduates of Canadian art schools would give some idea of the practical values of such an education. Graduates can be found pursuing their own professional studio practices, as well as careers in teaching, curating, commercial galleries, and sales.
