Program description

Bachelor of Arts in Design

A three-year course for people seeking careers in design. Includes specialist pathways in graphic design & illustration, animation & game design, industrial design or fashion & textile design.

Career opportunities in Design are growing both nationally and internationally. The BA in Design is an exciting course emphasising both traditional and modern-day skills.

The course begins with a foundation year, followed a choice of creative pathways focused on one of the following specific design areas:

  1. Animation & Game Design
  2. Industrial Design
  3. Graphic Design & Illustration
  4. Fashion & Textiles Design

The course places strong emphasis on Drawing and Visualisation, Design Thinking and Design Technology.

Other topics include Photography, Digital Media, Design History & Theory, Creative Problem Solving, Business & Entrepreneurial skills and an Ethical and Sustainable Design ethos.

Our course also features a five-month industry placement that links with industry partners nationally and internationally.

Employers value design graduates for their creative problem solving, good communication skills, IT literacy, flexibility, teamwork skills and visual presentation skills.

Admission requirements

The minimum Leaving Certificate entry requirement for all Higher Certificates (Level 6) and ab initio Bachelor degrees (Level 7) is Grade O6/H7 or better in five Leaving Certificate subjects including Mathematics and English or Irish with a minimum of 160 points.

Tuition fees

There are two main elements to Undergraduate Fees at GMIT:

  1. Student Contribution – all students are liable for the Student Contribution fee. The fee for the 2020/2021 Academic Year is €3,000.
  2. Tuition Fee – the government will pay the Tuition Fee for most first-time, full-time EU Undergraduates as part of the Free Fees Initiative. The tuition fee for Non-EU students is €6,950 per academic year.

Continuing studies

Graduates are eligible to apply for the Bachelor of Arts in Design Level 8 in CCAM

Graduates are also eligible to apply for Honours Degree Level 8 studies in any of the above or related design areas, nationally or internationally, in other institutions.
