Nursing
From the fundamentals to the latest procedures and technology, this degree prepares you for a career as a registered nurse. You’ll learn to provide care to people of all ages with common physical and mental health problems. Your high-tech training includes plenty of hands-on experience with a wide range of clinical skills, health assessments and medication administration. In addition to a significant emphasis on patient care, you will also learn about drug classifications and their effect on the body, as well as the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Throughout your training, you’ll practice critical thinking, leadership, team building and accurate communications, which will prepare you to work effectively in a variety of environments and with diverse patient populations. Electives allow you to pursue specific areas of interest. Upon completion, you'll be eligible to take the National Council of State Board's examination to become a registered nurse.
Admission requirements
Teas Score Requirement
A TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) composite score of 58.7 or above is required for admission to the Pre-Associate Degree Nursing, Dental Hygiene, OTA , Medical Lab, Neurodiagnostic, and Vet Tech Programs.
Students must obtain a C grade in each required general education and core course. If a C grade is not obtained, you will be required to repeat the course.
ATI is a required fee upon entry into the Nursing program. ATI will be utilized in all theory classes, clinical and skills classes.
To be successful and safe in this program, students must meet the minimum requirements for English language proficiency (high intermediate at minimum, with advanced level preferred). Students who do not meet these requirements can get help by enrolling in FVTC’s Intensive English program.
DocuCare is a required purchase each semester. It is an electronic health record that will be used in some classes, all clinical and some skills classes.
Criminal activity reported will be communicated to healthcare agencies which provide student clinical and internship opportunities. Healthcare agencies have the legal right to deny a clinical or internship experience based on crimes committed. Completion of your program cannot be guaranteed if your criminal history precludes you from completing any clinical or internship experience.
You will be required to complete a Certified Criminal Background Check prior to enrollment into internship or clinical experience. Do not submit these records until you are asked to provide them to your instructors.
Even though you will be admitted in to one of the nursing programs upon completion of the above requirements, you will not be eligible for core nursing courses until you show completion of a Nursing Assistant (DHFS approved) class to staff in Room E121 on the Appleton campus.
Your program requires that you complete Anatomy & Physiology which has the following prerequisite: ACCPL Read >= 80 OR ACT Read >= 20 OR for programs requiring TEAS a Composite >= 50 OR Program Prep; ACCPL Sentence >= 83 OR ACT Engl >=18 OR for programs requiring TEAS a Composite >= 50 OR Program Prep; and 2 semesters of HS Chemistry OR Gen Chemistry (10-806-134) with C or better.
There is an estimated wait time of up to one year AFTER your admit term to enter occupational specific courses; while waiting to start occupational specific courses, you may choose to take general education and elective courses required for your degree or diploma program.
Students will be required to electronically submit clinical documentation, which includes immunizations, when accepted into core courses.
