Visual Effects and Editing for Contemporary Media

The Visual Effects and Editing for Contemporary Media program will build on your graphic design, photo and video editing, broadcasting or animation skills, giving you the advanced tools to succeed as a ¬specialized post-production professional.

In this post-graduate certificate program, you’ll learn the theory of digital technology and become proficient in using software for video and audio editing, motion graphics, 3D animation, compositing and visual effects. You'll also get practical instruction in real-life client settings and an internship within the post-production industry, gaining valuable experience and industry connections.

You'll emerge from the program with the technical skills, knowledge and practical tools for a career in advanced post-production. You'll be able to show potential employers your creative abilities with a professional demo reel, and apply the theories you’ve learned in a practical setting.

Admission requirements

  • An Ontario College Diploma, or Ontario College Advanced Diploma, or Ontario College Graduate Certificate from Fanshawe College in:
    • Broadcasting - Television OR
    • Fine Art OR
    • Multi Media Design and Production OR
    • Interactive Media Design OR
    • Interactive Media Design and Production OR
    • Graphic Design OR
    • 3D Animation and Character Design OR
    • Photography OR
    • Video Game Design

(Note: minimum 'B' average or 3.0 GPA from one of the above programs)

OR

An equivalent qualification from another institution as judged by the College

(Note: minimum 'B' average or 3.0 GPA)

OR

Professional background and experience as judged by the College to be equivalent to the above

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

  • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 88 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.5 with no score less than 6.0 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years. SDS Program Requirements.
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 70 with no score less than 60 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 59, with test results within the last two years
  • A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 176 with no language skill less than 169, with test results within the last two years
  • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 75% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
  • Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9 or 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

Qualification

Credential - Ontario College Graduate Certificate

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

  1. Create complex visual effects utilizing professional compositing techniques such as Chromakey, Motion Tracking, Rotoscoping & Matting.
  2. Apply advanced Post Production concepts while working collaboratively in the industry.
  3. Analyze and critique professional projects using proper terminology.
  4. Operate Post Production industry standard computer software and hardware.
  5. Combine and manipulate audio, video, graphics and animation elements.
  6. Manage and organize large amounts of media, files and documents on digital devices.
  7. Model, render and integrate 3D elements into video projects using professional techniques.
  8. Trouble shoot and problem solve video and computer issues during the creation Post Production projects.
  9. Edit and mix audio elements for use in video productions.

Career opportunities

Graduates of the Visual Effects and Editing for Contemporary Media program will work in video or film editing, visual effects, compositing, animation and motion graphics.
