Program description


Using DSLR cameras, you'll master the fundamentals of video and audio capture, as well as learning the nuances of black and white and colour digital printing systems. Experienced professional photographers teach and mentor students in photography theory and science, lighting and staging techniques, marketing and small business management. High performance laptops, digital imaging and video editing software and 24/7 access to Fanshawe's on-campus photography studio will give you a professional advantage in this creative field. Students also have access to print services and equipment loans on campus

Admission requirements

  • OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (M), or Open (O) stream


  • Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE)


Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED)


  • Mature Applicant with appropriate preparation

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods

  • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years SDS Program Requirements
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with a score of 60 in writing, reading and speaking and a score of 50 in listening
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
  • A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
  • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
  • Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

  1. select and use appropriate photographic equipment and techniques to capture quality images* of a variety of subjects, in studio and on location
  2. use post-production techniques to edit and finish images in formats that meet industry standards and the needs of the client
  3. create lighting schemes* using appropriate techniques, equipment and accessories to produce quality images* that meet the needs of the client
  4. employ design elements* and principles* to plan and create visually sound images
  5. complete all work in a professional and ethical manner and in accordance with legal requirements applicable to the photography industry
  6. develop strategies to maintain currency with evolving photography trends, issues, technologies and industry practices to enhance work performance and guide professional development
  7. select and use digital asset management* tools and strategies to catalogue, store, back up, retrieve and archive images and prints
  8. use business planning and administrative skills to support and maintain a photography business
  9. use a variety of marketing tools and strategies that effectively promote photographic products and services
  10. develop and present a professional portfolio that illustrates one’s creative approach and image conception, capture, editing and production skills

Career opportunities

Graduates find work as photojournalists, or in architectural, advertising and fashion photography. And, if you have the entrepreneurial spirit, point your camera to a career in public relations, commercial, portrait, wedding or group photography

Graduates of the two-year program will have good employment possibilities as photographers, assistants, and technicians in small and large photographic studios, printing labs, government or other public or private agencies as sales representatives or freelance artists
