Program description

Fitness and Health Promotion

As a student in our health and fitness program, you'll study exercise science courses in anatomy and physiology, nutrition, principles of fitness, training with weights, exercise physiology, athletic injuries, and personal training. Additionally, you'll experience a variety of health and fitness courses to help you learn the valuable business skills that you'll need to start a successful career in fitness club management, or how to manage a club of your own. Our health and fitness program provides great hands-on, practical experience at Fanshawe's on-site fitness centre. You'll also get two extensive on-site work experiences at one of the employers or community partners of the program

Admission requirements

  • OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U),University/College (M), or Open (O) stream WITH
  • Any Grade 12 English (C) or (U)
  • Grade 11 or Grade 12 Biology (C) or (U) OR Grade 12 Introductory Kinesiology (U)

(Note: minimum final grade required for each course is 65)


  • Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE) WITH
    • Communications
    • Biology

(Note: minimum final grade required for each course is 65)


  • General Arts and Science Ontario College Certificate AND
    • minimum final grade of 'C+' or 65 in the required courses stated above


  • Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) WITH
    • The combined Language Arts - Reading AND Language Arts - Writing test results having a minimum average Standard Score of 520 AND
    • Grade 11 or Grade 12 Biology (C) or (U) OR Grade 12 Introductory Kinesiology (U)

(Note: minimum final grade required is 65)


  • Mature Applicant with standing in the required courses and grades stated above

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods

  • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years SDS Program Requirements
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with a score of 60 in writing, reading and speaking and a score of 50 in listening
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
  • A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
  • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
  • Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

Tuition fees

Canadian students

The tuition fee for Canadian students is 1,360.26 CAD, and the total fees are 2,113.64 CAD.

International students

The tuition fee for International students is 7,233.50 CAD, and the total fees are 8,592.86 CAD.

Credential-Ontario College Diploma

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

  1. conduct assessments of fitness, well-being, and lifestyle for clients and effectively communicate assessment results
  2. prescribe appropriate physical activity, fitness, active living, and lifestyle programs to enhance health, fitness, and well-being of clients
  3. utilize appropriate interviewing and counselling skills to promote or enhance health, fitness, active living, and well-being of clients
  4. collaborate with individuals in the selection and adoption of strategies that will enable them to take control of and improve their health, fitness, and wellbeing
  5. develop, implement, and evaluate activities, programs, and events which respond to identified needs and interests of clients* and maximize the benefits of health, fitness, and well-being
  6. train individuals and instruct groups in exercise and physical activities
  7. contribute to community health promotion strategies
  8. assist in the development of business plans for health and fitness programs, activities, and facilities
  9. implement strategies and plans for ongoing personal and professional growth and development
  10. develop and implement risk management strategies for health and fitness programs, activities, and facilities
  11. interact effectively with clients, staff, and volunteers in health and fitness programs, activities, and facilities.

Continuing studies

If you’re interested in furthering your studies, the health and fitness course will also give you a great foundation to pursue a degree in kinesiology or nutrition

There are also several articulation in place that give you a head-start on a university degree or a second college diploma

One of the transfer agreements is with Hartpury College in gloucester, England. This opportunity will enable Fanshawe college fitness and health promotion graduates to earn a bachelor's degree in sports studies in just one year of studies after graduating from Fanshawe college

Career opportunities

There is a wide spectrum of potential employers in the fitness industry for graduates (i.e., not-for-profit centres, commercial gyms, police applicant testing, workplace wellness corporations, and performance-based specialized fitness studios). Graduates find employment creating supportive environments for physical activity and enhancing fitness within the general population and at agencies dedicated for youth, older adults, athletes, and other special populations
