Early Childhood Education

If shaping and nurturing the young minds of the future while enjoying a satisfying and in-demand career interests you, Fanshawe’s Early Childhood Education program will give you the skills and the hands-on experience to get you on your way.

Our unique early childhood education program blends theory and coursework with real experience in the field, so you’ll graduate with all of the skills necessary to begin your career. You’ll develop your knowledge and professional skills in child development with the assistance of our diverse early childhood education courses. Additionally, you’ll learn about your valuable and specialized role in the community, the importance of play in children's learning, the family involvement, and curriculum design and implementation on your way to securing your diploma in early childhood education.

After graduating from our Early Childhood Education program:

When you graduate from our Early Childhood Education program, you’ll have a diverse and dynamic set of skills for the always evolving world of childhood education. You’ll be qualified to work in a variety of jobs including child care centres, early learning and family centres, Best Start programs, before and after school programs and with school boards.

At the end of the day, a child’s education is only as effective as their educator. The Early Childhood Education program will allow you to make a real and lasting difference in the lives of children.

Admission requirements

  • OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U),
  • University/College (M), or Open (O) stream WITH:
    • Any Grade 12 English (C) or (U)

OR

Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE)

OR

  • Human Services Foundation Ontario College Certificate AND:
    • standing in the required course stated above

OR

Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED)

OR

Mature Applicant with standing in the required course stated above

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

  • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years. SDS Program Requirements.
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
  • A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
  • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
  • Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

Level 4

Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:

Program delivery

This program is now offered in an online format beginning September 2020. Students complete the program in an online environment with the exception of mandatory field placements in semesters 2, 3 and 4 of the program.

Canadian students

The tuition fee for Canadian students is 1,360.26 CAD, and the total fees are 2,113.64 CAD.

International students

The tuition fee for International students is 7,233.50 CAD, and the total fees are 8,592.86 CAD.

Qualification

Credential - Ontario College Diploma

Certification: Certification by the Association for Early Childhood Educators, Ontario may be applied for after completion of the program.

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Create learning contexts to enable, build and maintain caring, responsive relationships in partnerships with children, families and communities that value and respect social, cultural and linguistic diversity including Indigenous peoples’ worldviews and Francophone identity;
  2. Co-create, facilitate and reflect upon inquiry and play-based early years and child care programs and pedagogical approaches to support children’s learning, holistic development and well-being following children’s capabilities, interests, ideas and experiences;
  3. Co-design and maintain inclusive early learning environments to value and support equitable, accessible and meaningful learning opportunities for all children, their families and communities in a range of early years and child care settings;
  4. Collaborate with children, families, colleagues, agencies and community partners to create, maintain, evaluate and promote safe and healthy early learning environments to support independence, reasonable risk-taking and healthy development and well-being;
  5. Use observation strategies to identify children’s strengths and challenges and to ascertain when children and families might benefit from additional support or community resources;
  6. Use professional communication in interactions with children, families, colleagues, employers, the regulatory body, government authorities and children’s service agencies to meet legal and ethical standards of the early years sector;
  7. Act in accordance with relevant legislation, regulations, College of Early Childhood Educators Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, agency policies and procedures and principles of evidence-informed practice and reflect upon their impact on one’s own role in early years and child care settings;
  8. Identify, report and document when a child is in a situation of perceived risk for, or actual neglect or abuse, in accordance with legislation, the College of Early Childhood Educators Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, policies and procedures;
  9. Create and engage in partnerships with families, communities, colleagues, interdisciplinary professionals, authorities and child service agencies to advocate for quality early years and child care programs and services;
  10. Engage in reflective practice and continuous professional learning in accordance with principles of lifelong learning, evidence-informed practices in the early years sector and requirements of the College of Early Childhood Educators.

Graduates find employment in a variety of early childhood settings: nursery schools and child care centres, pre-kindergartens and kindergartens, community, social and family centres, hospital playrooms, centres or programs for children with exceptionalities.
