Civil Engineering Technology

Infrastructure is the glue that keeps cities and towns connected, vibrant, and safe. From water, to storm, sewer and highway systems, our health and safety relies on trained and experienced civil engineers to maintain, design and build the vital infrastructure of our cities and towns.

What to expect from our civil engineering courses

With Fanshawe's Civil Engineering Technology program, you'll study structural engineering concepts like the design of steel frame and reinforced concrete buildings. In our civil engineering courses you will analyze theories for the treatment of water, sewage and solid wastes. You will learn how to select and test construction materials and develop skills in computer assisted design (CAD) and drafting, electronic surveying methods and writing technical reports. With a diploma in civil engineering you will be trained to ensure that our communities remain safe and connected by learning on cutting-edge engineering technology, and with in-class lectures. As well, you'll receive hands-on experience in the field of civil engineering, with a full twelve months of paid co-op

Admission requirements

  • OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U),University/College (M), or Open (O) stream WITH
  • Any Grade 12 English (C) or (U)
  • Mathematics ONE OF
    • Any Grade 11 Mathematics for College Technology (C) (preferred)
    • Grade 12 Advanced Functions (U)
    • Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors (U)
    • Grade 12 Mathematics of Data Management (U)
    • Grade 12 Foundations for College Mathematics* (C) (Note: minimum final grade required is 60)

OR

  • Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE)

OR

  • Pre-Technology Ontario College Certificate

OR

  • Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) AND
  • Mathematics ONE OF
    • Grade 12 Mathematics for College Technology (C) (preferred)
    • Grade 12 Advanced Functions (U)
    • Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors (U)
    • Grade 12 Mathematics of Data Management (U)
    • Grade 11 or Grade 12 Foundations for College Mathematics (C) (minimum final grade required is 65)

OR

  • Mature Applicant with standing in the required courses stated above

Note

  • Applicants who lack required courses may be admitted to the program subject to appropriate prior upgrading
  • Students entering with Grade 12 Foundations for College Mathematics (C) will be required to take additional preparatory mathematics as part of their program of study

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods

  • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years SDS Program Requirements
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with a score of 60 in writing, reading and speaking and a score of 50 in listening
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
  • A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
  • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
  • Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

Canadian students

The tuition fee for Canadian students is 1,360.26 CAD, and the total fees are 2,319.93 CAD.

International students

Credential - Ontario College Advanced Diploma

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

  1. Develop and use strategies to enhance professional growth and ongoing learning in the civil engineering field
  2. Comply with workplace health and safety practices and procedures in accordance with current legislation and regulations
  3. Complete duties and monitor that work is performed in compliance with contractual obligations, applicable laws, standards, bylaws, codes and ethical practices in the civil engineering field
  4. Promote and carry out sustainable practices* in accordance with contract documents, industry standards and environmental legislative requirements
  5. Facilitate the collaboration and interaction among the project team and project stakeholders* to support civil engineering projects
  6. Collect, process, analyze and coordinate technical data to produce written and graphical project-related documents
  7. Use industry-specific electronic and digital technologies to support civil engineering projects
  8. Participate in the design and modeling phase of civil engineering projects* by applying engineering concepts, technical mathematics* and principles of science to the review, production and/or modification of project plans
  9. Contribute to the scheduling and coordination and cost estimation of civil engineering projects* and monitor their progression by applying principles of construction project management
  10. Coordinate and perform quality control* testing and evaluate equipment, materials and methods used in the implementation and completion of civil engineering projects
  11. Apply teamwork, leadership, supervision and interpersonal skills when working individually or within multidisciplinary teams to complete civil engineering projects

Career opportunities

Students who graduate from this program will become part of the overall engineering team concerned with the design, construction, supervision and operation of all types of civil projects. Graduates will be employed by consulting engineers, surveyors, government agencies and contractors who maintain, manage, design and supervise the building of vital infrastructure of our cities and towns
