Research Master Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts

Challenge yourself in this interdisciplinary Research Master’s Programme! Combine social-scientific training and hands-on research experience. Develop your own research interests and prepare yourself for a PhD, or a research-oriented career outside of academia. This Master’s of Science (MSc) Programme is designed for talented and motivated students, who are interested in research on culture, media and the arts.

Get in-depth, internationally focused, social-scientific training. Study key issues in media, arts and society. Go on to a PhD or a career in research, policy, or consultancy.

Admission requirements

You are eligible for the Research Master's programme if you meet the following requirements:

  • You hold a university Bachelor's degree in the social sciences or the arts
  • You have basic knowledge of social scientific research methods
  • You have a sufficient level of English proficiency (see below)
  • An average grade in your previous studies of at least 7.5 according to the Dutch grading system

Program content

This research master teaches you how social scientific research creates knowledge, and how you may design and carry out your own empirical research. You will explore the main lines of theoretical inquiry and contribute to the academic debate. 

The programme prepares you for a PhD position in sociology, arts and culture studies, media and communication, and related fields, but is also a perfect stepping stone to a career in applied research, policy, or consultancy.

Once you graduate you will have:

  • in-depth knowledge of the main theoretical insights and current debates in the sociology of culture, media and the arts;
  • a solid grasp of the latest research and state-of-the-art methods in the field;
  • a practical understanding of how research creates knowledge in the social sciences;
  • the ability to apply social-scientific knowledge and research skills in new or multidisciplinary settings;
  • a sound basis for pursuing a PhD position or any other research oriented job outside academia.

More than half of all Research Master alumni proceed to do a PhD programme after graduation. For the first three cohorts of graduates, this percentage is 65%.

Tuition

The full tuition price for local/EU students is 2,168 EUR. The price for International/Non-EU students is 11,800 EUR.

Impact of Brexit on tuition fees for British nationals studying in the Netherlands now or in the future: Until the end of the transition period (until 31 December 2020), there will be no changes to tuition fees or student finance for British nationals studying in the Netherlands.
