Part 1. Finding Attractively Priced Wines - Day 1

The first day of the course focuses on the issue of wine pricing. First, we investigate the determinants of wine prices. Then we build on this discussion and establish a wine pricing model. Using dedicated analytical tools, we conduct a practical exercise to quantify the relationship between variables (reputation, expert scores, ratings, etc.) and wine prices.

Part 1. Finding Attractively Priced Wines - Day 2

On the second day, we examine how to find attractively priced wines. First, we study the organization of the wine market. A simulation exercise illustrates that not all wines are fairly priced, and we identify how some are too cheap whereas others are too expensive. Finally, we deepen the analysis of wine pricing and examine how to identify interesting buying opportunities, i.e. underpriced wines.

Part 2. Managing Wine Investments - Day 1

On this day, we explore wine price indices. We see that it is not easy to precisely assess the evolution of wine prices over time due to the specificities of the wine market (limited number of transactions, no central market place, etc.). We address the concept of illiquidity, discuss the issues it may induce, and examine how we can deal with them. We conclude with an exercise in analyzing how wine prices have changed over the last decades.

Part 2. Managing Wine Investments - Day 2

On day two, we look at the performance of wine investments. First, we examine the risk and return features of fine wines and contrast them with other collectibles such as classic cars and artworks. We then delve into the portfolio perspective and examine if wines are appealing from a diversification standpoint. This chapter includes a critical analysis of wine investment funds.
