Master of Economics

This Master's Program in Economics is designed to equip you with the analytical tools you will need for work in the field of Economics. The specific objective of the program is for you to acquire tools for economic analysis and to apply these in policymaking in the public and private sectors. You will develop advanced skills in terms of a solid knowledge in economic theory – in particular microeconomic theory and quantitative methods – for understanding and analysing economic problems. These skills are essential for a practising economist in many applied fields.

Solid training in research is emphasised through the requirement of thesis work. In the writing of the thesis, you will demonstrate and practise your ability to integrate economic theory and methods in a context raised by the research question.

Admission requirements

If you have a degree focused on Economics or Finance and wish to further your understanding of how economic policy affects society, then you are strongly encouraged to apply. Since the program includes the composition of a thesis, it is ideal for you if your intention is to pursue research or if you aim to demonstrate to potential employers an ability both to understand economic theory and methods, and to integrate these into real-life situations.

Specific entry requirements

A Bachelor’s degree comprising at least 180 credits with a major in Economics or equivalent knowledge. Documented language proficiency knowledge equivalent to English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school or equivalent knowledge.

English language proficiency

The most common tests and important scores that are accepted are:

  • IELTS (academic training), 6.5 (with no part of the test below 5.5)
  • TOEFL (Internet based): 90 (with a minimum of 20 on the written part)
  • TOEFL (paper based): 575 (with a minimum of 4.5 on the written part)

  • Mathematics for Static Analysis in Economics (NA3008)
  • Applied Microeconomics (NA3001)
  • Econometrics (NA3011)
  • Economics of Leadership (ANA235)

Semester 2

  • Advanced Microeconomics (NA3005)
  • Welfare Economic Analysis of Public Policy (NA3007)
  • Master Thesis (NA3010)

Scholarships & funding

There are a number of scholarships available for successful applicants to the Economics who are not EU/EEA citizens.

Tuition

  • First Tuition Fee Installment: 43 500 SEK
  • Total Tuition Fee: 87 000 SEK

EU/EEA Citizens or exchange students are not required to pay tuition fees.

Tuition fees are paid in one-semester installments and the first payment (43 500 SEK) must be paid no later than June 1st. This allows for reasonable processing time for a residence permit application.

Qualification

Upon completion of the program, students will be awarded a Master of Science in Economics.

Program objectives

The objective of the program is for the students to acquire tools of economic analysis and apply them to public and private policy making. The students will develop advanced skills, in terms of a solid knowledge in economic theory, in particular microeconomic theory and quantitative methods, for understanding and analyzing economic problems. Following a successful completion of the program students shall have attained:

Knowledge and Understanding

  • An extended knowledge of theory development and the research frontier of applied micro economic analysis and apply them to public and private policy making.

Competence and Skills

  • The ability to understand and analyse economic problems, social dilemmas and issues for economic analysis and be able to discuss both in written and oral form;
  • The ability to use advanced knowledge in economic theory, in particular microeconomic theory and quantitative methods;
  • The ability to formulate relevant research questions which are founded both in theory and method;
  • The ability to collect, handle and analyse empirical data. This also entails the presentation of a thesis in which relevant concepts and theories are elaborated.

Judgement and Approach

  • The ability to judge and demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of relevance for data collection, analysis and presentation of economics results.
  • The ability to judge and demonstrate awareness of implications for sustainability and social groups.

Continuing studies

This program will prepare you for advanced studies in PhD programs in Economics.

Career paths

Upon completion of the program, you will be prepared for staff and managerial positions in the public and private sectors that require the integration of microeconomic analysis and advanced quantitative methods.

Your career opportunities in the private sector include consultant, trading expert, financial advisor and analyst. Opportunities in the public sector may be found within education and NGOs.
