Computer Science MSc

This Master’s degree aims to expand your capability and expertise in computing or IT related fields. The course focuses on the underlying theories of computer science and their practical applications in the latest technological developments.

The course aims to provide you with a sound understanding of essential development platforms, protocols and standards with an emphasis on computer architectures, artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analysis, internet security and the development of web-based and mobile applications.

The course is designed in consultation with industry professionals to deliver an up-to-date syllabus with the latest technology and employment trends. The course is designed and delivered with input from our industry contacts.Upon completion of the course we aim for you to acquire advanced skills and knowledge which could lead to careers such as computer system designer, programmer, consultant or researcher.

You will have the chance to study in our modern Engineering and Computing Building with well-equipped laboratories and industry standard software.

Admission requirements

UK students

To enter the course you need to have one of the following:

  • A minimum of a second class honours degree in a computing related subject. Applications from graduates in other disciplines (such as mathematics, physics or engineering) with experience in programming would also be considered on individual merits.
  • An unclassified degree plus at least two years' further study or professional experience in computing related subjects.

International students

To enter the course you need to have one of the following:

  • A minimum of a second class honours degree in a computing related subject. Applications from graduates in other disciplines (such as mathematics, physics or engineering) with experience in programming would also be considered on individual merits.
  • An unclassified degree plus at least two years' further study or professional experience in computing related subjects.
  • This course requires IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5.

The work placement pathway:

The ‘With work placement’ opportunity enables you to apply for an optional 12 month work placement module, extending the duration of your Masters to 24 months over six semesters. The placement would take place in semester’s three to five and provides an opportunity for you to develop your expertise and experience with the aim of enhancing your employability upon graduation. Placement opportunities may be subject to additional costs, visa requirements being met and subject to availability and/or competitive application. Work placements are not guaranteed but you will benefit from the support of our employability and placements team in trying to find and secure an opportunity. Please note that the optional placement modules incur an additional tuition fee of £4,000. Find out more about the work placement option.

Qualification

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate computation complexity associated with programming algorithms to deliver effective solutions to real-world problems.
  • Critically evaluate computer architecture and networked system solutions along with their related security issues and threats.
  • Develop relevant technical skills in emerging technologies to adapt to the challenges in the computing related field in a global context.
  • Develop a wide range of postgraduate level professional and transferable skills in building computer-based systems in a team work environment.
  • Develop the awareness of professional, social, ethical, and legal issues along with commercial risk and management for computer-based systems.
  • Develop research skills required for advanced computer science topics selected according to the interests of individual students, and
  • Critically evaluate and develop solutions to complex, inter-related, multi-faceted issues that can be found in a variety of organisations and professional contexts.

The main educational aim of the MSc Computer Science course includes as follows:

  • To deliver up-to-date theoretical and practical subjects across a range of focussed areas of computer science;
  • To apply the emerging methods, tools and techniques in the emerging technologies relating to computerbased systems;
  • To provide specialist skills and in-depth knowledge essential for graduates to develop and adapt to the challenges in the field;
  • To develop skills and knowledge acquired through previous study and experience to enhance students' technical, transferable and professional skills and, thereby, their wider employment prospects;
  • To develop the understanding in the central problems of research in applied and theoretical computing as effective independent researchers and/or consultants in their chosen specialised areas;
  • To enhance the awareness of the professional, legal, ethical and social issues along with commercial risk and management in the role of a computing professional.
