In 2012, they were awarded Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP) which came into effect in 2013, meaning they could award their own degrees. Their programs, formerly taught through correspondence, transitioned to being taught wholly through supported online learning.
In 2015, UCEM was awarded University College status by the UK Government and the Privy Council, and changed their name from The College of Estate Management to University College of Estate Management.
UCEM's Virtual Learning Environment, your learning platform
The University College of Estate Management teaches all of their programs online so students can learn when they want to and wherever they are, around their work and other commitments.
Technological advances mean there has never been a better time to continue your education through online learning. UCEM is always exploring alternative media and new, interactive ways to learn. They continually invest in their online facilities to enhance their teaching resources, tools and techniques through their online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
The VLE is the gateway to a student's learning journey and their global learning community. Students can turn on their computer, connect to the internet and its there. Students can take it with them when they need to – they can access the VLE on their mobile device, tablet or laptop on their coffee break, on the train, wherever they are.
The VLE contains student's structured weekly learning for each module. Learning materials are provided through a variety of media ranging from e-textbooks, videos, info-graphics through to interactive e-learning resources which can support students' studies both on and offline. Join the conversation and hear a variety of perspectives and opinions – an essential part of gaining the widest range of insights student's can take with them into the world of work.
UCEM's online guidance from highly experienced tutors helps students to make the most of their learning experience, and their dedicated professional services team provide regular support and information.
Through the VLE, students can access the e-library giving them access to ebooks, journals, articles and other online resources that they will need throughout their studies.
Four weeks before they start a program module, students will be given access to the induction module which will allow them to get used to studying using the Virtual Learning Environment. This module is compulsory for all students so it’s worth starting as soon as they are given access.
Structured learning, week by week
Each week students will have a number of resources to work through and some will involve them taking part in activities. All the material that has been put together has been carefully selected and planned by a tutor at UCEM to ensure they learn all the things they need to learn in order to pass the program and to give them support and help to make it interesting and thought provoking for them. The activities and variety of material in each week will depend on the topics that week.
There is also plenty of opportunity for them to share their thoughts and ask questions to both their tutor and their fellow classmates through forums and virtual classrooms.
The support you’ll receive
The staff at UCEM strongly believe in providing students with all the support they need to complete their studies, and are with them every step of the way. Their academic staff are on hand to provide the guidance and support needed for students to complete their coursework and prepare for their exams.
‘Student Central’ is the main online area that students will go to for all the queries they may have that are related to Student Services, including Finance, IT and the e-Library. Student Advisers will respond to all queries received within two working days, and if the answer to the question will take more than two days the team will keep the student updated on what is happening. Those studying will have their own area within Student Central where they can see all the questions that they have asked whilst they have been studying with UCEM. There is also an FAQ section that contains over 400 FAQs, so students can find answers to common queries.
