College for Creative Studies
For more than a century, the College for Creative Studies (CCS) has distinguished itself as one of the premier institutions of art and design education in the world. The College traces its heritage back to 1906 when a group of local civic leaders, inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement, formed the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts. The Society’s mission was to keep the ideals of beauty and craftsmanship alive in what was rapidly becoming an industrialized world.
Now a fully accredited, degree-granting college, CCS has redefined that mission to address the needs of contemporary society by preparing students for careers in creative industries.
The College for Creative Studies was named “one of the best design schools in the world” by BusinessWeek. It awards the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Advertising Design, Communication Design, Crafts, Entertainment Arts, Fashion Accessories Design, Fine Arts, Illustration, Interior Design, Photography, Product Design and Transportation Design, and the Master of Fine Arts degrees in Color and Materials Design, Interaction Design, Integrated Design and Transportation Design. It enrolls over 1,400 degree students.
CCS supplies creative talent to a wide variety of industries, such as transportation, entertainment, consumer electronics, health care, advertising, athletic apparel and equipment, and many more. Among its alumni are the current heads of design at Harley Davidson and Kohler, the recently retired design chief for Whirlpool, numerous designers at Nike, the production designer for Pixar’s Cars movies, and the executive editor of Mad Magazine.
The founding mission of the College for Creative Studies was “to encourage good and beautiful work as applied to useful service.” That spirit still animates the College today as it aims to educate the best artists and designers in the world and to use art and design in building a better Detroit for all its citizens.

CCS offers two outstanding housing options for students: Taubman Center and Art Centre Building.
Taubman Center (TC): This is the newest building at CCS. It is located in the New Center area of Detroit, about one mile from the main campus. The building was formally GM’s Engineering, Research, and Design Headquarters. It was built in the 1920s, and it is enormous! It houses all of the CCS Design disciplines, classrooms and studios, the MFA programs, student housing, a CCS student store, restaurants, art galleries, auditoriums, and more. The student apartments are modern, sleek, efficient, and practically brand new. They do not include kitchens. Students living at the TC are required to purchase meal plans.
Art Centre Building (ACB): This is a historic apartment building located on CCS’s main campus, the Ford Campus. The Ford Campus is located in Midtown Detroit, one of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods. The Ford Campus houses CCS’s arts and crafts disciplines, foundations, liberal arts, student services, and more. Apartments in the ACB are large and spacious, and they include kitchens. The building is older, and so it has great charm and character!
