About this program

Theoretical Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence

The program prepares experts for research and development in the areas of Theoretical Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. Education is implemented by doing independent research under the supervision of senior experts.

In addition to obtaining foundations in Computer Science, the students acquire deep knowledge in a chosen specialization area such as: algorithms and data structures and their analysis, knowledge representation and reasoning, cognitive sciences and their applications, machine learning, multi-agent systems, problem modeling (e.g., in automated planning or decision making) and problem solving using logical, probabilistic, and nature-inspired methods. Students learn how to formulate research goals, prepare a project proposal to achieve the set goals, and present the results in the international environment. Further, they gain experience teaching and mentoring students including thesis supervision.

Admission requirements

Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by successful completion of a Master's study programme.

Description of verification and evaluation criteria

Admission for studies

Admission for studies in one of our doctoral study programmes taught in English will be granted to the applicants, who

  • Submitted a complete application form together with all obligatory attachments before the deadline,
  • successfully passed the entrance examination or they were granted an entrance examination waiver,
  • successfully passed the language examination or they got a waiver of it

Invitation to subject entrance examination

The invitation to the subject entrance examination will be sent to those applicants, who

  • submitted a complete application together with its obligatory attachments 2,3 and 4 before the deadline,
  • paid the application fee,
  • did not obtain the confirmation of the waiver of the subject entrance examination before mid-May, 2022.The invitation to an entrance examination is delivered through the University Electronic Information System. In mid-May, 2022, all applicants without a waiver receive an invitation to take the entrance examination from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. If the Faculty approves the waiver, the invitation ceases to apply.

Entrance examination

The entrance examination consists of two parts, subject and language one. The subject part of the entrance examination takes the form of a discussion about the chosen study programme. The committee gives the applicant three questions related to the chosen study programme. The committee judges the correctness of the answer, the knowledge of the field and overall readiness for doctoral studies. Each answer is evaluated on the binary Pass/Fail scale. The applicant must obtain three passing grades. If the applicant has chosen one of the thesis topics offered by the faculty and has obtained an approval of a future supervisor, or if the committee accepts the annotation of the applicant‘s own topic, the applicant will successfully pass the exam with only two passing grades from three questions.

The language entrance examination consists of a written test. The applicant may obtain a maximum of 100 points, the threshold for passing the exam is 50 points.

Career paths

Our graduates possess state-of-the-art knowledge in the field of Theoretical Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence and actively add new results to these areas. They have experience with algorithm and data structure design and analysis, with AI tasks that include problem solving, automated planning, decision making, optimization, machine learning, design of cognitive models and robotic systems. The graduates are familiar with the core principles of scientific work and are able to specify their own research goals to solve the problems. They have experience with the work in an international environment, with university teaching, and with team work, typically involving development of complex software projects/systems. They know how to present their results and justify them in international competition. After graduation, they can work mainly in research and development both in academic and commercial environments.
