Program description


The graduates of Ecology acquire theoretical knowledge and practical (methodological) skills covering all common ecological concepts. Within this framework, they achieve a specific education in terrestrial and aquatic ecology, encompassing all structural levels from molecular ecology, autecology, intra- and interpopulation interactions, towards large-scale ecology (communities, ecosystems, phylogeography). They are able to use recent analytical approaches of quantitative ecological data. The graduate is well prepared to further development of research skills during relevant PhD studies, or to professional and methodological work e.g. in surveys, analyses or monitoring for state, public or commercial administration.

Admission requirements

Conditions for a language examination waiver T

he language examination will be waived if the applicant fulfills at least one of the following waiver conditions:

  1. The applicant spent at least two years of his/her previous education at secondary or university level with English as the sole language of instruction in one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, South Africa, UK or USA.
  2. The applicant does not need to take the language examination of English if (s)he has already passed one of the following exams (in some cases we recognize the exam only with a minimum score or level):
  • General State Language Examination in English in the Czech Republic
  • examination in English at Charles University, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (including the entrance examination from English for Ph.D. studies)
  • TOEFL (ITP) – 627 points
  • TOEFL (iBT) – 95 points
  • IELTS – min. 7 points
  • Cambridge English Certificate: C1 Advanced
  • Cambridge English Certificate: C2 Proficiency
  • Unicert – min. level C1
  • LanguageCert: C1 Expert
  • LanguageCert: C2 Mastery

Career opportunities

The graduate is qualified to do independent research in ecology. This includes identification and analysis of key research questions, design of experimental and data collection techniques and analytical tools for their handling, up to the final presentation of the results. The qualification also includes essential theoretical concepts on which the discipline and its methodology are based. The graduate has a command of English sufficient to do research at research institutions outside the Czech Republic.
