Maritime Policy and Shipping Management (Taught)

The MSc in Maritime Policy and Shipping Management program is practically-oriented and it draws heavily on the research and consultancy of the staff, reflecting our leading international position in the field of maritime affairs.

The program has been developed largely for students who wish to enhance their careers in international management and policy-making in a maritime context, either in practice or in academia. In the taught stage, you will study a combination of core and optional modules covering shipping operations, management, and policy formulation. Opportunities to consider shipping within wider logistics systems are also provided.

The dissertation stage allows you to further develop an area of special interest in the maritime field, enabling you to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you have gained during the taught modules.

The program equips you to go into the private or public sectors including the business environment, government or academia.

The modules shown are an example of the typical curriculum and will be reviewed prior to the 2020/21 academic year. The final modules will be published by September.

Admission requirements

Candidates will normally have the equivalent of a 2:1 degree (GPA 3.0/4.0) from a recognised institution in a relevant discipline such as Transport, Engineering, Business/Management, Geography, Law, Social Sciences, Maths or Humanities.

Non-graduates with sea captaincy qualifications and extensive marine related work experience will also be considered. .

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to obtain a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each category (or an equivalent English language qualification).

  2. A critical awareness of current approaches shipping management as identified by leading research.
  3. An ability to evaluate the impact of emerging trends and issues on the organisation, regulation, and management of international shipping.
  4. A systematic understanding of the impact of changes in the maritime regulatory framework on international shipping.

  2. A capability in methodologies used in the empirical investigation of maritime issues.

  4. A competence in analysing complex problems on the basis of rigorous data and communicate clearly their solutions to specialist or non-specialist audiences.
