Program description

International Public Relations and Global Communications Management (Taught)

Public relations is a booming industry and has continued to grow year-on-year. The numbers of Public Relations Officers (PROs) now match journalists in the UK and there is a big demand for graduates who have the skills to meet the dynamic changes of this exciting and growing sector.

Public relations specialisms are expanding too, and graduates are gaining jobs in a number of areas including crisis management, corporate social responsibility, media relations, corporate communication, sponsorship and internal communication.

The MA International Public Relations and Global Communications Management is a unique one year course that develops the skills and techniques required to practice public relations and communications at an international level.

Public relations, at its heart, is about communication between an organisation and its public(s), but 21st century public relations - with the advent of new media - is embedded in everything from politics and business to celebrity. PR is now firmly at the heart of strategic organisational planning.

Aside from gaining valuable practical skills, you are introduced to business, organisational and PR theory so that you can apply critical thinking to professional scenarios to further the effectiveness and quality of public relations that is practiced in industry. This synthesis of theory and practice culminates in a final dissertation of 1500 to 2000 words where you have the opportunity to apply what you have learnt to an area of personal PR interest. This piece of advanced academic study would enable you to embark on further research in the field of international public relations, should you wish to do so.

Distinctive features

  • The degree is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and we are one of only ten Partner Universities in the UK to the Public Relations Consultants Association (PRCA).
  • Our School was ranked first in the Guardian’s University league table for Journalism and Public Relations (2016 and 2017).
  • The degree is designed for both UK/EU and international students interested in international PR and communications management.
  • Your student group will come from a wide range of national and cultural backgrounds offering you exposure to comparative practices.
  • It is a hybrid course mixing both theory and practice.

The modules shown are an example of the typical curriculum and will be reviewed prior to the 2020/21 academic year. The final modules will be published by September.
