Advanced Practice (Education for Health Professionals) (Taught)

Join a School ranked 4th in the UK overall and 1st for our research environment in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework assessment (under Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy). Our challenging and rewarding programme is designed specifically for those who are involved in healthcare education and the teaching and learning of healthcare professionals at all levels.

Our programme aims to empower you to be a reflective practitioner through self-appraising past and future teaching styles. We aim to increase your ability to be aware of the types of assessment and evaluation strategies used in education and practice areas.

This course offers an opportunity to study core module interprofessional modules inclusive of research methods and facilitating teaching and learning. You will develop the knowledge required to approach your practice innovatively, apply research and evidence to shape current and future practice.

You will have the opportunity to plan teaching sessions and strategies, implement educational assessment and evaluation strategies and lead practice and curriculum development activities. The aim of the programme is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to integrate theory and practice that enable you to teach other professionals and service users who remain at the heart of the health and social system.

Your learning will be supported by experienced researchers and academics who are experts in their field. You will be designated a personal tutor who will support you throughout your studies. In addition, you will be learning alongside a diverse group who are studying at various points in their career, sharing knowledge and gaining understanding of practice across the sector.

Admission requirements

English Language Requirements for non-UK applicants

Students whose first language is not English will be required to pass an IELTS test (or recognised equivalent).

Knowledge & Understanding

  • A critical and systematic understanding of the concepts of educational practice and its integration and application to the development of health education;
  • A critical appraisal of what constitutes scholarly activity and the ability to critically evaluate dimensions of theory and practice, applying new knowledge and skills to educational practice;
  • Demonstrate originality and critical evaluation of the use of advanced methods of scholarship and techniques;
  • Critically analyse strategies for supporting learning and discuss the development of effective relationships with colleagues supporting students’ learning across a range of environments;
  • Demonstrate a critical awareness of contemporary approaches to learning and implement strategies, which will facilitate students to maximise their potential for learning and contribute to the development of practice.
  • Critically explore approaches to the assessment of learning and implement strategies that facilitate professional judgements of achievement of required standards, exercising accountability for decisions and providing feedback to learners;
  • Develop a critical understanding of approaches to evaluation to determine the effectiveness of learning and teaching strategies in achievement of required standards and the quality of learning environments.
  • Critically reflect on the characteristics of an effective learning environment and create appropriate learning experiences that allow learners to function as part of an inter-professional team whilst maintaining the integrity of their professional role.

  • Critically evaluate relevant research material, through posing questions of enquiry and apply new techniques and information to professional judgments, complex decision making and development within the field of education;
  • Provide critical appraisal of complex problems associated with educational practice and the ability to problem solve and develop solutions based on evidence, and sound professional and clinical judgment;
  • Demonstrate, through independent study, critical reflection on practice, to critically analyse situations and develop new approaches to practice;
  • Critically analyse the evidence base for practice to enhance own learning, disseminating research findings and empowering others to develop the evidence base to improve care and enhance learning opportunities;
  • Critically explore quality assurance processes in education and practice and established audit criteria and processes to enhance the quality of the learning experience.

  • Initiate, lead and manage educational developments to meet health and social care needs, ensuring the safe and effective organization and provision of quality patient focused care;
  • Critically evaluate identification and addressing of personal and professional development needs through a variety of learning and teaching situations;
  • Demonstrate originality and critical appraisal of communication strategies used to communicate and disseminate knowledge to the inter-professional team;
  • Critically explore academic leadership, demonstrating strategic vision and developing effective relationships when developing programmes and responding to evaluations of learning, teaching and assessment strategies across practice and academic settings, in order to enhance the effectiveness of learning provision;
  • Critically appraise the impact of policies on contemporary professional practice, providing a credible role model to learners when supporting practice developments through change management.
