Program description

About the course

Occupational Therapy at Brunel is one of the largest, longest established, and most highly regarded education providers globally. We are the original ‘London School of Occupational Therapy, established in 1934 and we became part of Brunel University London in 1995. We offer placement opportunities that provide experience of working in mainstream NHS, social care and non-statutory services with a range of culturally and socially diverse service groups.
The Occupational Therapy (Pre- Registration) MSc provides a route for graduates to become competent occupational therapists equipped for life-long, safe and effective practice within the global marketplace.
The programme is for those who are not already qualified as occupational therapists. It is a professional two-year, full-time programme and includes four practice placements completed over the course.
Both the campus-based study and the placements will prepare you to become a competent occupational therapist in a variety of health and social care settings. On the programme you’ll learn in a wide range of practice areas. You’ll study an optional module that enables in-depth consideration of a specialist area of current practice and you’ll complete a research dissertation.

Special features

The programme is accredited by the College of Occupational Therapists (COT) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). It is recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapy.
The programme has also been given ‘Pre-accreditation Status’ by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), which confirms that Brunel has successfully completed the first two steps in a three-step initial accreditation process.

Teaching and learning

Year one introduces you to the ‘how, what and why’ of occupational therapy and you’ll have the opportunity to develop, explore and critique core occupational concepts and skills. In year two you’ll gain critical knowledge and evaluation of key issues within professional practice in tandem with developing your research skills, team working, leadership and clinical competence.
You’ll be assessed through essays, practical demonstrations, practice placement reports, presentations and a written dissertation.

During the programme you’ll undertake 28 weeks of practice placement in 4 blocks. With your academic studies this creates a strong foundation for your career. The ‘Preparing for the Workplace’ modules cover core competencies for practice and continuing professional development, preparing for interviews and developing a personal statement. There are career opportunities in the health service, social services, education or the private and voluntary sectors.
