Philosophy and Ethics
Rather than teaching philosophy primarily as a history of ideas – although we do explore this – we focus on the application of current philosophical thinking in contemporary settings and circumstances. You’ll consider our responses to environmental crises, for example, or questions of identity, belonging, social justice and the interplay between the personal and the political.
We consider Western philosophical and ethical perspectives, and introduce you to the systems of thought of India and China. This mix of content and the inclusiveness of our approach make the Philosophy and Ethics course particularly distinctive, vital and compelling.
Philosophy
Our Psychology course begins with intentional support for your successful transition to university, carries you through the content and skills that define a Psychology graduate, and ends by opening up conceptual and career possibilities you may not have previously considered.
In addition to exploring the five main psychological perspectives: biological, cognitive, developmental, individual differences and social, and research methods, you will engage with the historical and conceptual underpinnings of Psychology throughout. You’ll also learn to leverage your science to the benefit of your fellow students, industry and for social good.

Philosophical knowledge Systematic and comparative knowledge of the complexity of philosophical enquiry, argument and analysis that draws on a range of philosophical traditions
Philosophical debates Systematic understanding and analysis of selected debates and theories in the study of philosophy,and their application to contemporary issues, challenges and problems
Ethical perspectives Detailed comparative understanding, interpretation and application of ethical concepts and theories from a transcultural perspective, using contemporary examples
Theory and method Integration, evaluation and application of concepts, theory, methods from different philosophical traditions in support of independent analyses of a diverse range of issues and problems
Reasoning and argument The ability to formulate, critique, defend and evaluate your own and others’ philosophical positions with clarity, precision and intellectual rigour, leading to a sustained and independent line of argument
