Educational Leadership
This EdD Educational Leadership taught doctorate is designed to allow Headteachers who have successfully gained a MSc in Educational Leadership to complete their studies at doctoral level and is taught in partnership by the School of Education, Bangor University and Yr Athrofa: Institute of Education, University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD). This program has been approved by the National Education Leadership Academy (Wales).
Students will undertake an extended, independent, critical and evaluative research project on a relevant and appropriate academic topic of interest in the field of school leadership. This project will make an original research contribution to the field of knowledge and be worthy of wider, external dissemination.

Graduates from the MSc Educational Leadership program will be able to identify important areas for investigation based on school self-evaluation data and determine the actions required to lead and sustain school improvement.
Alongside a detailed knowledge of the principles and practice of leadership within the current educational agenda at local, national and global levels students will enhance their critical understanding of the links between leadership theory, pedagogy and practice and develop a robust knowledge of close to practice research approaches and related methods.The program will develop students’ knowledge and understanding of key leadership issues in the current school and political context in Wales and provide a comprehensive understanding of relevant research and scholarly approaches applicable to practice and school improvement. In particular students will develop an informed knowledge of how the results of this application may improve pupils’ outcomes and develop research policy and practice.
Course Structure
Graduates from the EdD Educational Leadership taught doctorate will undertake a research project at doctoral level reflecting appropriate skills of assimilation, synthesis, argument, communication and presentation.
The student will produce a thesis that establishes the present state of research knowledge in a defined area and makes a significant contribution to that research knowledge. The thesis will demonstrate a deep and insightful research-based knowledge of their particular chosen topic for research and critically evaluate a breadth of accumulated research information and interpretations, drawn from a wide range of sources.
Students will also be able to demonstrate a critical awareness of relevant leadership and management theoretical and conceptual considerations underpinning their research project and understand and apply appropriate ethical standards.
