About this program
Our high-performance professional master is a one-year programme and is directed towards helping everyone realize their potential. This is achieved through a fully integrated approach to the field of Animation, as well as expanding the areas of creative practice in an interdisciplinary way. We create a space of experience and encounter that encourages dialogue in relation to current formal, technical, thematic and theoretical concerns that are relevant today. We are committed to supporting ambitious and diverse study interests and approaches.
Drawing on the expertise of teaching staff, as a student you integrate process orientated studio work in relation to animation practice with the acquisition of theoretical principles relevant to innovatory studio practice. You gain access to the formidable expertise, resources and the networks of our coalition partners, Playgrounds, Submarine & Post Panic among others, and connections with studios and festivals in the Netherlands and abroad. Taking account of sector needs in creative employment, as a student you have access to our industry network and regularly execute assignments in collaboration with our partners, allowing them to test their ambitions within an international professional context. Tutors in the programme are Leon van Rooij, Sarah Lugthart and Remco Vlaanderen.
Master Institute of Visual Cultures
The Master Institute of Visual Cultures (MIVC) is part of St. Joost School of Fine Art & Design, which is part of the Avans University of Applied Sciences. All Master programs of the MIVC are housed within a single campus location, close to the heart of the city of ’s-Hertogenbosch. The MIVC aims to achieve international standards of excellence in the master education of artists and designers and related practitioners. It aims to achieve these through the quality of its teaching, research and practice and through its relationship with the institutions, industries and technologies associated with the disciplines of art and design.
It is our ambition to contribute to the world we live in, working collaboratively and creatively with the cultural and creative sector, NGO’s, business and government, to generate new knowledge and exchange of that knowledge, to imagine another future capable of transforming the world we live in. The MIVC provides a transformative education, empowering students to become the new generation of artists and designers who will contribute in unconventional ways to changing the complex and interconnected world we live in. By creating a unique educational environment, where the tradition of 24/7 studio practices sit at ease with practices driven by ideas and context, and where artists and designers together, through an interchange of ways of thinking, create new knowledge to tackle some of the most pressing and challenging societal issues of our time.
Emphasis is placed on the role of the artist and designer in society and on modes of criticality, to navigate, rethink and transform the complexity of contemporary life. Highlighting the societal ramification of creative work, we see it as our civic responsibility to be a thought leader, demonstrating the value of creativity to society, and through dissemination to contribute to increased awareness and an understanding of the importance of art and design as a field of knowledge.
The programme is meant for animators and illustrators committed to exploring the growing application of animation within art, design and interactive media.
Animation is open to Bachelor of Animation and Bachelor of Illustration graduates, or similar practicing professionals in the field with experience in animation.
Admission requirements include a portfolio, artistic statement and animated film.
