Master Sound of Innovation
Sound of Innovation is about discovery. Discover yourself and your own unique talents and learn to use them in exciting and novel ways. Develop innovative products, projects, and concepts that have their roots in music, but reach as far as your imagination allows. Expand your professional practice to include music and other sound-based products that cross boundaries between sectors and challenge existing conventions. Are you ready to think big?
The modern musician, composer, sound artist or producer has to look ahead and must learn to challenge existing boundaries and preconceptions, both within and outside the field of creative art. The Sound of Innovation offers a stimulating interdisciplinary environment to help you to reflect, research and experiment, and to gaze into the crystal ball to make predictions and to help shape the sound of the future.
The heart of the ArtEZ Master’s course The Sound of Innovation is a voyage of discovery and invention. Looking beyond the horizon of what we already know. Questioning conventions and redefining the borders between disciplines and sectors. Predicting and contributing to cultural, social, and economic development.
Admission requirements
Do you want to apply for the Master the Sound of Innovation in Enschede? If so, you must meet the following conditions:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a creative field (for example music, art, musicology or cultural history) or another relevant field (for example communication, sociology, communication and multimedia design, education, psychology, technology, law, economy or business administration)
- A track record of writing, playing and/or producing music
- Proof of your talent and development potential in the form of a showreel or portfolio of your own music/audio productions
- A positive result from the entrance examination
- Proof of your English language proficiency

Program content
Course structure
The Sound of Innovation in Enscgede is comprised of a collective programme (Innovation Lab), a joint module and an individual route.
Innovation Lab (collective programme)
In the Innovation Lab you focus on practice-based experience, research and development. Using your own qualities and interests as a starting point, you will work together with your fellow students in developing innovative concepts and products, with a focus on: fostering and harnessing creativity; concepting and imagineering; project management and presentation. Together, you will bring new ideas to the table, explore them and find applications for them whenever possible. There is input from a team of teachers who are specialised in the various disciplines and subjects that are relevant to the Innovation Lab. The process is interactive: you help to decide if guest teachers should be invited to the lab and which themes and topics you wish to address.
Individual route
In the individual route you choose your own lessons and modules. You decide what you want to focus on: it all depends on what you are working on and what you need. There are teachers available to help and guide you with your route and your choices where necessary. You can select entire courses as well as individual lessons, optional modules, and electives from other programmes such as Music Therapy or Media Music. In your second year, you are allocated a personal budget which you can use to fund your choice of master classes, workshops, or external coaching.
Connecting the Dots (joint programme)
You will meet the students who follow the other Master’s courses at ArtEZ during Connecting the Dots. This consists of a project week, various workshops, and the Meet the Master's course. Connecting the Dots is about exchange, collaboration, and connection: you get a taste of (music) disciplines other than your own and you benefit from working with makers who, like you, aredeveloping their own practice.

Upon successful completion of the Master's The Sound of Innovation, you are entitled to use the academic title Master of Music (MMus).
