Master Jazz & Pop in Arnhem
The Master Jazz & Pop at ArtEZ provides a stimulating environment in which you learn to draw up and try out your ideas. Of course, you will be fine-tuning your skills, being on stage a lot, but at the same time you are urged to challenge yourself: by being curious, experimenting, asking questions and conducting research. You are challenged to let go of certainties and seek out your own motivations, and you do so always from a self-reflective point of view. The course helps you to develop not only your talents and skills, but also your vision: the artistic and social workings of your vision, with which you can take the lead in a rapidly changing work field. Are you ready to re-define yourself as an artist? Do you dare to experiment? Can you shape up and fine-tune your personal artistic signature, boost your creativity, or look beyond the borders of your own discipline?
As a student, you will learn to design new performance practices and to take on an entrepreneurial role within them. You organise concerts according to your own vision: placing your work and cooperation with others within a larger research trajectory. You develop the skills and know-how for putting together a program from the specific concerns of a musician, as opposed to those of a manager. You learn to curate from artistry. Getting to know the field enables you to be creative in it and to find new pathways – to take the lead and to open doors.

Program content
Course structure
As a master’s student you draw up your own personal study plan. This plan will become the interface through which you give shape and direction to your study activities. The two-year Jazz & Pop program is flexible, multifaceted, and interdisciplinary. You combine your individual route with joint learning, while focussing on performing and curating in the Performance Lab. Your research is closely connected to the acquisition of practice-based experience.
Individual route
In the individual route you choose your own lessons and modules: you decide what you want to focus on. If your major is instrumental or vocals, you could for example expand your skills in composing or delve into musical theatre. It all depends on what you want and what you are working on.
Performance Lab (collective program)
In the context of Performance Lab, you focus on practice-based experience and conducting research, using three productions of your own creation as a starting point. Besides that, you work together with all your fellow students in Arnhem. Together you decide which guest teachers you want to invite into the group for workshops and masterclasses and which themes and topics you want to cover. Some examples would be of masterclasses on video and visuals, producing, funding, radio making, stage design, stage presentation, working multi-disciplinary and score making.
Connecting the Dots (joint master’s program)
Besides the individual route and the collective Performance Lab, you will encounter all your fellow Master of Music students in Connecting the Dots, that consists of a project week, various workshops, and the common Meet the Masters program. Connecting the Dots is about exchange, collaboration and connection: you get a taste of music disciplines other than your own and you benefit from studying in an environment with makers who, like you, are working on shaping their practice.
Research: parsing your fascinations
In order to consolidate the connection between your practice and your personal interests, it is crucial to dive into the things that engage you. By deepening your knowledge and increasing your abilities, you allow yourself to get to the centre of who you are as a musician. What is it that fascinates you? How do you give voice to your interests, incorporating them into your music and striking the right chord with your audience?
