International Master Artist Educator
ArtEZ University of the Arts
About this program
International Master Artist Educator
Art can address issues and act for social change. Whether it takes place in a museum or in the public space, art is taught through experience. The international Master Artist Educator (iMAE) program is not about projecting art onto communities, but about working together with a variety of groups and individuals: from public servants to the private sector, with both artists and non-artists, teachers, students, NGO’s and policy makers. At iMAE we learn by doing and making together. You bring – and throughout the program further develop – your own practice and research interest to address pressing social concerns: migration, identity, conflict, environment and diversity.
As a master student at iMAE you learn not only how to use existing research methodologies, but also – and mostly – how to develop your own creativity to produce unique research methods that fall within your practice and existing skill set. You combine international fieldwork with practice and theory, to learn how to apply your own research interests to specific contexts.
At iMAE we promote the concept of the artisteducator as one identity. This simply means we see art as education and education as art. Therefore, an iMAE graduate is not an art teacher or teacher of art, but an artisteducator who uses their practice as a vehicle to enable agency and social change.

Course structure
At iMAE we have a clear focus on Site Specific Colleges: education programs on specific international locations which cover a variety of contexts, from political unrest to areas of conflict and societal division. All places have their own background and provide a one of a kind opportunities – and challenge – to live, work and learn among different languages and cultures. Together with local communities and top practitioners, you further develop your own practice and research, but always with a focus on social change. Throughout the year, students visit three different locations:
Arnhem, The Netherlands
We start in the city of Arnhem, emphasising the theme of identity: the study of the self and how self is formed. You focus on your own journey as artisteducator and create artistic works that reflect on your urgencies and interests. Working from our studio and teaching spaces at De Oude Kraan, on the banks of the river Rhine, we introduce you to some of the key contemporary debates in socially engaged arts practice, artistic research and educational studies, through theory, workshops and (guest) lectures.
Brussels, Belgium
The Site-Specific College in Brussels centres around migration and diversity. The international Master Artist Educator is closely working together with the MIGRATIEMUSEUMMIGRATION. Our Artist Educators come together with organisations and NGO’s working with people who fled their homes, cultural organisations and the EU.
Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland
With a recent turbulent past, Northern Ireland is the designated place to investigate how art and pedagogy can contribute to reconcile opposing parties. In Derry/Londonderry we work together with the Playhouse Theatre and the Peace Education Centre: they support you in linking up with local communities, art institutions and universities to enable you to develop your graduation project. In Northern Ireland we put peace, conflict and transformation at the heart of our learning.

Career paths
Once graduated, you are prepared for the complex reality of your role as an artist in society. As an iMAE graduate, you are an agent of change: you are in the rhythm of questioning what is important, what is urgent and how to relate to this as an artisteducator. Artisteducators are professionals who are able to manage both human and financial resources.
iMAE graduates will find work in the context of social practice and community arts. They get to be social and creative entrepreneurs, who will keep on influencing this growing field of practice. They create new models of praxis (combinations of practice and theories) that will lead to the production of new ground-breaking projects. They work in multiple settings and apply their work to and with international Non-Governmental Organisations, schools, colleges and community education programs.
