Program description

The Year 1 workshop projects begin with making a simple plate designed to introduce students to hand tools, hand skills and accuracy. Subsequent projects introduce more tooling, equipment, new skills and closer tolerances. Where possible the projects involve making a tool that the student will be able to retain and use throughout their working career. The final aircraft sheet metal project will be making a tool box in which to keep all their tools.

Along with the workshop aspect of the course, there is a substantial amount of classroom learning that introduces the knowledge related to and required for each project. Formal learning will be based around the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Textbook series FAA-8083, supplemented with a range of other source material. As well as attaining the formal Qualifications students will also sit a range of New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (NZCAA) Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME) exams where the topic has been covered as part of the qualification and syllabus.

Strategic purpose statement:

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the aeronautical engineering industry with graduates equipped with a comprehensive base of core Aeronautical Engineering skills and knowledge. This qualification is intended for learners who are planning to embark on a career in the aviation industry as an aeronautical engineer.
