Program description

Nordic Master in Polymer Technology

The Nordic Master in Polymer Technology is based on the expertise of the participating universities within polymer technology, polymers and polymeric materials. The program targets international students wishing to profit from the Nordic Five Tech universities' long standing tradition and competence in the field and Nordic students wishing to specialize in a specific area of expertise offered within the alliance.

The program provides a solid base in the chemistry and physics of organic materials, as well as their connection to real-life applications. A broad range of courses and the choice of one of five specialization tracks allow students to customize their degree and focus on individual areas of particular interest.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for the program, you must have been awarded a bachelor's degree, be proficient in English and meet the program-specific requirements listed below.

Program-specific requirements

A bachelor's degree, corresponding to at least 180 ECTS credits, in chemistry or closely related subject including courses in:

  • Chemistry or closely related subject corresponding to at least 50 ECTS credits.
  • Mathematics, numerical analysis and computer science corresponding to at least 20 ECTS credits.

Please note that the following TOEFL test score requirements are specific for the master's programme in Macromolecular Materials, track Polymer Technology:

  • Paper-based: 580 (written section grade 4,5)

Program content

Students will learn about design, synthesis, characterization, production and development of polymeric materials throughout the duration of the program. The materials covered in the program includes plastics, rubber, composites, paper, wood and other biological materials. Students will be able to tackle challenges pertaining to the choice of raw materials (renewable versus fossil), and the choice of production processes, material combinations and manufacturing methods. Great emphasis is placed on environmental issues, such as environmentally-friendly material production and the development of sustainable materials.

The first year covers a broad range of topics providing students with in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of polymer technology and related areas. The curriculum also contains selective courses to prepare students for the second-year study track. Each university provides one specialization track designed to deepen the students’ knowledge in a specific area. The tracks are:

  • Biomaterials science (Aalto University)
  • Advanced materials (Chalmers University of Technology)
  • Polymer engineering (Technical University of Denmark)
  • Macromolecular materials (KTH Royal Institute of Technology)
  • Industrial processes (Norwegian University of Science and Technology)

For more information about each study track, please visit the university website.
