Real-world energy challenges, collaborative solutions, sustainable tomorrow - a pathway for an exciting future in sustainable energy and environmental work. This is a joint program leading into double Master's Program.

The Master's Program in Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems (SELECT) is for engineers who want hands-on experience in solving real-world energy challenges. The SELECT program will equip you with critical skills needed in analysing and solving tecnical problems, creating business ideas, in advanced team-building and international cooperation. Throughout the program you will have unrivalled opportunities to engage directly with major industrial players as well as smaller actors, NGOs and start-ups in the field of sustainable energy. You will be able to share ideas, learn from their experiences, and gain invaluabel insight into the transition from basic renewable energy sources to fully sustainable energy systems.

You will join students from all over the world at two different universities and one of  Europe's leading business schools. You will study the first year either at KTH or UPC, and continue the second year in another partner university, specializing in the topic of your choice. At Aalto you will focus on sustainable biomass processing, or may choose a wider view on energy.

Program content

Year 1

During your first year, you study at either:

  • KTH: Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm 
  • UPC: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech

Courses in the first year focus on topics such as sustainable energy conversion, renewable energy, and ways of ensuring minimal human impact on the environment.

The content of the first-year courses is the same at both universities. Students based in KTH will join courses of UPC virtually, while those based in UPC will join courses of KTH virtually.

Year 2

During the second year, you choose one of the following specialist tracks to deepen your knowledge:

Combined Energy Systems at KTH: Royal Institute of Technology

Combined Energy Systems deals with multiple energy services from combinations of renewable energy sources. You will focus on the “art” of combining multiple energy sources to produce various energy services in an efficient, cost effective and sustainable way. In particular the course explores the topic of polygeneration and the synthesis of complex renewable energy systems.

Delivered by the prestigious KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, the course offers a broad and diverse mix of compulsory and optional topics to extend your knowledge and understanding.

Requirements: Beyond the subjects covered in the MSc SELECT in Year 1, no special requirements are stipulated.

Energy Efficiency at PoliTo: Politecnico di Torino

Deepen your understanding of new energy pathways in future complex-integrated systems, with a focus on efficiency in the industrial and residential contexts.

Innovation in Energy Systemsat TU/e: Eindhoven University of Technology

Explore innovation in electrical power supply systems. From smart grids to energy storage, from built environmental design to socio-economic implications for developing countries, this course digs deep into supply and demand in the context of real-life case studies.

Offshore Energy Systemsat IST: Instituto Superior Técnico

Explore the innovation, the economic, the legal and the ecological dynamics at work within the implementation of energy technologies. Build strong scientific and technological problem-solving skills while developing your creativity, entrepreneurial and leadership competencies.

Requirements: The course is intended for students with a BSc in Engineering or Engineering Sciences and requires solid knowledge in mathematics, physics, chemistry, information systems as well as understanding of economics and management.

Solar Systemsat UPC: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech 

Acquire expertise in the field of solar systems. This course draws on solid scientific knowledge, while delivering a broad perspective on technological development in innovation and sustainability. You also have the flexibility to explore a range of additional topics and areas that align with your interests and learning objectives.

Sustainable Biomass Processing at Aalto University

Acquire specialised knowledge and expertise in the areas of sustainable energy production, conversion systems and markets.

Sustainable Fuels Economy (SFE)  at AGH: University of Science and Technology

You will attend a different university in each year of study. You will be required to select both universities for Year 1 and Year 2 during your application.
