Speech and language therapists (SLTs) enjoy a rewarding, specialist career working with parents, teachers, carers, nurses, doctors and occupational therapists. Almost one in five experience communication difficulties and this is where SLTs support people to develop, restore, or give strategies to build communication. SLTs also support people who struggle to eat, drink or swallow. SLTs work in hospitals, schools, community clinics and specialist units. You will learn core skills in topics such as linguistics, phonetics, science, psychology, and speech and language pathology. You will also develop your clinical and professional skills through practical placements and modules that cover counselling and professional skills.

As a speech language therapist youll facilitate independence in individuals. Youll assess children, young people and adults with a variety of communication and swallowing disorders and work with them to improve their ability to participate in school, work and other daily activities. You may work with children who have speech and or language disorders, or adults living with a traumatic brain injury or stroke.

The Division of Speech and Language Pathology (SLP) offers an undergraduate minor in speech and hearing science, which provides students with the basis necessary to develop foundational knowledge in normal and disordered processes of speech, language and swallowing.

This course is intended for speech pathologists, or others who have completed a relevant undergraduate degree and wish to pursue a career that includes research or gain a competitive advantage in their career by completing an additional postgraduate qualification. Students gain research skills and expertise in their area of research interest, and demonstrate their outstanding academic ability and commitment to their field through the completion of the degree.

Home to the National Centre for Audiology and the H.A. Leeper Speech and Hearing Clinic, the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) educates students in the professions of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

As a student studying speech communication at Minot State University, you will gain valuable experience evaluating evidence and developing written and verbal arguments, delivering professional presentations, composing a variety of written products such as blogs, press releases, and crisis plans, and completing hands-on projects with local organizations.

Our graduate students and senior-level undergraduate students gain experience providing speech and hearing services in the campus-based AAMU Speech and Hearing Clinic and externship sites across the state. This degree program contains both academic and clinical components.
