The MA program prepares candidates to assume advanced roles in the field of Special Education. Current research and best practices in the field of Special Education underpin the curriculum. The program consists of a core of advanced coursework, electives, and a culminating experience (thesis or comprehensive exam) that support advance study in the field of Special Education. There are 30 units of course work with a minimum of 21 semester units completed in residence. Candidates who apply to both the Master of Arts Degree and the Clear credential must adhere to the requirements for both programs (e.g., GPA and course grade requirements).

This MA will develop students' knowledge of special and inclusive education, focusing on autism. Led by the Centre for Research in Autism and Education (CRAE), students will be introduced to cutting-edge theory and research, and consider how it links to policy and practice. This MA will appeal to students looking to develop their professional practice and/or progress to doctoral study.

Certified graduates of Early Childhood Education who are eligible to teach Pre-kindergarten through 4th grade -and- Special Education Classrooms from Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

The main objective of the study program special education is to prepare highly qualified staff for theoretical and fieldwork in the area of providing special education services in the widest possible range, according to the differentiated structure of the Czech study fields of special education (SSP – support for disabilities related to sight, hearing, physical or mental state, support for citizens with communication skill deficits, autistic spectrum disorders, behavioral disorders or support for people with social disadvantages) with special focus on the current issues of contemporary special education in the international context. The fundamental asset of the Ph.D. study in the field of special education is the preparation of specialists to succeed in independent scientific research projects, leading to their personal and career growth to enrich the scientific field of special education as a modern social science area. The Special and Inclusive Education MA will develop students' knowledge of special educational needs (SEN) and inclusive education. Students will be introduced to cutting-edge theory and research and consider how it links to policy and practice. The MA will appeal to those looking to develop their professional practice, progress to further study about disability, inclusive education, and educational policy, and/or progress to doctoral study. The MA also has two specialist routes in Autism and Specific Learning Difficulties.

This major prepares individuals to become special education teachers for students grades K-12. Students major in special education with a concentration in either general curriculum or adapted curriculum. General curriculum licensure prepares teacher candidates to work with students with disabilities who are pursuing a standard high school diploma, whereas Adapted curriculum licensure prepares teacher candidates to work with students with disabilities who are more significantly impacted by their disability and working on a specialized curriculum. Both licenses may be obtained through specialized advising.

A variety of options are available at Mason for students to learn more about working with individuals with disabilities. Undergraduate and graduate programs with teacher licensure and non-licensure options prepare professionals working with populations across the lifespan with the specialized knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to support individuals with special needs. Mason’s bachelor's degree in special education is designed to prepare both educators for the classroom and individuals working in special education contexts outside of the classroom with the specialized skills and content knowledge to support the needs of individuals with disabilities.

The Associate of Arts in Education, Human Development, and Special Needs offers lower division coursework that provides an introduction to issues, policies, and practices of education, with an emphasis on special education. Students will build a foundation appropriate for entry into advanced study in education, including educational research, advocacy, public policy, and/or teacher preparation. The students also can participate in supervised fieldwork in K-8 settings.

This programme will develop students’ understanding of best practices in SEND and inclusive education provision. Students will gain an understanding of local and international SEND provisions, strategies and policies. Additionally, the wider socio-cultural influences on SEND provision, including the influence of cultural and historical context will be explored. Students will be able to evaluate the resources and support required for children with special education needs and disabilities and plan inclusive education in the classroom. Also, students will be able to design, communicate, implement, and manage inclusive provisions for an educational institution. As part of this programme, the student will critically analyze research and evidence in SEND practice, policy, and implementation, and be able to present and explain policy and best practices in inclusive education in local and international contexts. Finally, students will be encouraged to develop leadership and management skills related to SEND coordination, delivery, partnership and management.

The General Studies Education major introduces students to the following disciplines: education, literacy, and special education. Students select courses for broad-based study in the overarching area of education. The major allows for flexibility in course selection and degree design.

This BA in Special Needs Education program is recommended to applicants who are interested in people with disabilities and the possibilities of providing assistance to them, have good communication, social and creative skills and are motivated to participate in high-quality professional training. Our training program is particularly suitable for those with high levels of empathy, good cooperation and interpersonal skills, responsibility and self-awareness.

The Paraprofessional Education program prepares teaching assistants to work in K-12 schools in special education, reading, and general education classrooms. The program articulates the core requirements of the Elementary Teacher Education program while providing needed coursework to improve student learning. This degree is designed for teaching assistants and early childhood care providers.
