Salzburg is also home to three universities, which means a large student population and a flourishing student life. Therefore, a study abroad experience in Salzburg means making a ton of new, international friends, getting to know the sights, including the historic Altstadt, and participating in the adventure of a lifetime

After you’ve explored the city, take a tour through the idyllic Austrian landscape. Catch a glimpse of the Alps, walk through forests and valleys, or travel to a nearby lake. Whether it’s summer or winter, there are always outdoor activities in which to get involved. Go skiing, ice skating, snowboarding, hiking, biking, or horseback riding. There is something for everyone, no matter how adventurous you are!

Salzburg is also conveniently located if students want to explore the rest of Europe or Austria. Things to See When Studying Abroad in Salzburg

The Altstadt: Salzburg’s historic center is one of the best-preserved in the world. In 1996, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its baroque architecture and numerous churches. Situated along the banks of the Salzach river, visitors can take a scenic stroll while stopping at the various cafes, bars, and restaurants trying everything Austrian cuisine has to offer. One of the more famous churches in the Altstadt is the Salzburg Cathedral. Founded in year 774, the church was also the place where composer, Mozart, was baptized.

The Sound of Music: Fans of the film The Sound of Music will immediately recognize the Salzburg setting. Take a tour of all the set locations and learn about the background of the film production while seeing for yourself if the hills are really alive with the sound of music. You will find other fans singing and dancing along the streets to their favorite tunes as well. But, The Sound of Music isn’t the only music Salzburg is known for. The city is also the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the 18th century composer. Today, visitors can still visit the home in which he was born and get an insight into his upbringing and Austrian roots.
