They established a trading post on the site in 1611, which became a colony and finally the city of Montreal in 1832.

Montreal is named after Mont-Royal, the 3-peaked hill in the heart of the city. The city is known for its major festivals and culinary arts. It is a place of contrasts, with skyscrapers next to Victorian brownstones and old churches beside modern architectural marvels. The Museum Quarter of Montreal is full of fashion boutiques, art galleries, and specialty shops. Crescent Street is the center of nightlife, with bars, clubs, discos, and restaurants.
