What is an MBA degree?

An MBA degree is a Master’s degree in Business Administration – an extremely valuable qualification that will improve your chances of securing employment in a competitive job market and allow you to specialize in various areas of business if that’s something you’re interested in. It can also be a great way to help secure a promotion or a raise at the company you already work for. MBA degree programs can vary in content and structure, but most will include the following key elements:

  • Accounting
  • Economics
  • Marketing
  • Operations

What will I learn in an MBA degree?

If you’re looking for something to kick start your business career, you might be interested in studying an MBA degree that offers a broader overview. But typically, MBA degrees are undertaken by those already working in business with some experience under their belt – you will spot many degree programs that incorporate more specialist, in-depth teaching elements for those looking to focus on a specific area, including:

  • Managerial and Leadership Skills
  • Global Outlook on Business
  • Internships and/or field work
  • Communication and PR
  • International Marketing
  • Global Banking and Finance
  • Leisure and Tourism Management
  • Entrepreneurship
  • E-Business
  • Sports Management
  • Human Resources Management
  • Design Management
  • Reputation Management
  • Product commercialization

With so many valuable, interesting specialisms to choose from, it’s worth thinking now about which ones you might be interested in. Otherwise you might find yourself halfway through an MBA when you discover that it doesn’t offer the specialism you’re interested in. As you look through and compare the different types of MBA degree, do some research of your own into what might be involved in the various specialisms, so you end up on a course that takes you down the right path.

What are the prerequisites for studying an MBA degree?

Typically, most MBA degree programs will require you to have some professional work experience before starting, so bear this in mind when you start looking for one. Depending on the course of study you are applying to, and your individual circumstances, you might also be required to provide some additional information/evidence, such as:

  • Academic transcripts
  • Personal statements of purpose
  • Letters of reference
  • TOEFL/IELTS scores (in the case of non-native English speakers)

Requirements depend entirely on the MBA degree program you choose, so make sure you read the prerequisites carefully and don’t set your heart on something you aren’t yet qualified to do. If you find an MBA program you really want to do, but you don’t have the right skills or experience, then arm yourself with the knowledge of what you need to achieve, and invest a little bit of time to achieve what is required – then you’ll be in a much stronger position when time comes to submit your application. If you’re starting totally from scratch, you should take a look at Bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration – this will give you the solid grounding you need to get your business career started, and then you can take things further with an MBA later down the line if you’re still keen.

Don’t be put off by the requirements though – programs differ in what they ask for, and all kinds of experience may be considered by the education provider. MBA degree programs attract a wide variety of different people – from those starting out in their business careers, to those looking to improve their skills, or maybe advance into more niche areas of business – so remember that it’s not a case of one size fits all. One particular MBA is not only right for one kind of person with one kind of experience. If you’re not sure, just get in touch with the provider and ask!
