Explore Lugano

With approximately 65,000 residents, Lugano isn’t one of Switzerland’s largest cities. However, what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for with character. Situated in the Italian-speaking Ticino region, Lugano boasts magnificent views of both Lake Lugano and the Alps.

Neoclassical architecture and pastel colors are abounding, reminding those who visit of the city’s Italian influence. However, Lugano still retains a very distinct Swiss flair, which can be seen in the local customs, cuisine, and traditions. That being said, students who choose to study abroad in Lugano are granted a prime location to travel and explore the rest of Europe as well.

Lugano is within driving distance of Milan’s airport where students can catch a great deal on flights to almost anywhere in Europe. The city is also well connected to public transportation, especially trains, which will take students all over Switzerland and into bordering countries. Easily make trips to neighboring Italy, Austria, Germany, or France.

There are also several universities in Lugano, making it a great destination for students, especially international students who will want to make new friends and get a taste of student life. You won’t be disappointed by all the things Lugano has to offer. Plus, as a student, you will be granted generous discounts at attractions around the city.

Things to See When Studying in Lugano

Lake Lugano: A glacial lake situated between Switzerland and Italy, Lake Lugano is named after the city itself which lies on the western edge. The lake offers Lugano residents and tourists alike a beautiful setting to explore and enjoy.

Villas: Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello are just two examples of some of the beautiful villas that are scattered all around Lugano. A tour through one of these villas offers students the chance to explore beautiful gardens, marvel at the architecture and get lost in a fairytale world. It’s no wonder Villa del Balbianello was chosen as one of the locations to shoot famous Hollywood franchises, such as Star Wars and James Bond.

Mountains: You can’t go anywhere in Switzerland without marveling at the stunning landscape. One of that landscape’s most distinct features, of course, are its mountains. A stay in Lugano offers visitors that chance to explore some landmark peaks such as Monte San Salvatore or Monte Generoso. If you want to plan a fun day for you and your friends, take the cogwheel railway up Monte Generoso where you can dine at a restaurant with views of both Lake Lugano and the Alps.

By now, you should already be convinced that Lugano is one of the best places for students to study abroad. Still have your doubts? Check out some photos and explore all the degree program options offered by universities around Lugano!
