The United States is massive, to say the least. With a population of around 325 million people spanning America’s 9.8 million km², it’s no wonder the locals grow up believing that bigger is better. But, for students interested in studying abroad in the United States, it also means almost unlimited choices when choosing a university at which to study.

It isn’t hard to find a reputable university. The United States has some of the best universities in the world. The hard part will be choosing a geographic location suitable to your personality and preferences. There are vast lifestyle differences between east coast and west coast, north and south. But, whether you prefer the chill vibes of Los Angeles or the hustle and bustle of New York, you’re bound to enjoy your American study abroad adventure.

University and Degree Types

There are three primary institutions of higher education in the United States: colleges, public universities, and private universities. Depending on the school, up to four types of degrees can be awarded: associates, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degrees. The best American universities will often award a bachelor's through doctorate degree.

Public universities are at least partially funded by the state, and therefore slightly cheaper than private universities and more popular. Colleges most often serve the communities that surround them and award two-year associate degrees so that students can quickly begin a career. Most international students will choose to study at either a public or private university.

Popular Programs

All of the best universities in the United States are likely to offer a wide-range of interesting and unique courses suited to many different interests and career goals. Many American universities offer popular programs in the fields of business, psychology, biology, and engineering.

Many international students also take the opportunity to learn or improve their English by pursuing a full degree in English language and literature or by participating in a language development course. Living and learning in a country where English is almost exclusively spoken is guaranteed to help your language skills one way or another.

Student Visas

In order to study at one of the best universities in the United States, students will have to obtain a visa. Obtaining a visa to study in the USA can be a lengthy process so it's recommended that you begin your application as soon as possible.

The first step is to apply to one of the many thousands of schools on the approved U.S. Student and Exchange Visitor Program list. Upon acceptance, your school will supply you with the proper documentation to send in with your completed application to the United States’ government.

Expect to have to pay an application fee and sign up for an interview to receive your study visa.
