Liberal Arts and Humanities Degrees

Liberal Arts and Humanities Degrees

Liberal Arts is an education which covers a wide variety of disciplines including social sciences, mathematics, natural sciences and humanities. Humanities can sometimes be referred to as Liberal Arts, but in fact is a sub-discipline of Liberal Arts which involves the study of human condition (e.g. philosophy, history, religion, arts, languages, etc.). Institutions that provide studies in Liberal Arts focus on providing knowledge and skills of the intellectual arts rather than focusing on professional, technical or vocational skills for students.

History of Liberal ArtsHistory of Liberal Arts

The purpose of Liberal Arts origionally was to have well-informed “free persons” or citizens able to participate in civil duties and take part in public debates. An informed citizen could make justified and moral decisions based off a set of beliefs and skills learned through Liberal Arts.

These intellectual arts first included rhetoric, logic and grammar, but soon expanded in the medieval times (5th-15th century) by the Church´s rule to include mathematics, music, astronomy and geometry. In the Renaissance period (14th-17th century), Italians studying Liberal Arts decided to expand the discipline to include Greek, ethics and poetry.

Nowadays, Liberal Arts involves even more disciplines including mathematics, psychology and science. Liberal Arts is taught in a variety of institutions including universities, colleges, and long distance courses.

Areas of Liberal Arts

The education area of Liberal Arts is vast. These intellectual arts include some of the following disciplines:

As stated before, the discipline of Humanities can sometimes be used to describe the area of Liberal Arts. The difference is the discipline Humanities is the study of human condition and includes: history, religion, philosophy, languages and the arts, while Liberal arts is an education area which includes the disciplines humanities, social sciences, mathematics and natural sciences.

Degrees with Liberal Arts

Liberal Arts can be taken as different educations including: a full time 4 year Bachelor's degree, a two year Master's degree, a PhD degree, distance courses, college degree or free standing courses. Many students take a Bachelor degree in Liberal Arts and then further their studies in graduate school or professional school (e.g. philosophy, history, religion, arts, etc.) A degree in Liberal Arts is considered highly valued especially as an undergraduate degree or major at liberal art schools in the US. While Liberal Arts degrees are popular in the US, measures are being taken to improve Liberal Arts educations in Europe.

There is a strong focus on student to-student and student to-faculty interaction since Liberal Arts courses tend to be very opinion-focused and essay-driven rather than giving students professional, technical or vocational skills.

Careers: Liberal Arts degreeCareers with a Liberal Arts degree

The benefits of a Liberal Arts education or degree can offer a wide range of career opportunities as the discipline covers a variety of intellectual arts. Some of the most popular career choices include:

  • Political Scientist
  • Law or Legislation
