The dynamic spirit of the Copenhagen is reflected in its institutions of education, which work closely with local industry to provide students with implementable skills and supporting close ties between business life and education. If you want all the perks but none of the pitfalls of a large urban center, then Herning might be the study destination for you.

Despite its small size, Herning is a city that is passionate about culture – always a name associated with the textiles trade (Central Jutland was were Danes made clothes), Herning has diversified into other creative remits such as design, architecture, music, food and theatre. Overlapping and intertwining artistic spheres are reflected in the aspect of the city, where an eclectic mixture of modern architecture exists alongside an abundance of rhythmic green spaces. Cultural enrichment is conducive to an innovative study environment that offers high-quality institutions as well as plenty of activities for students to immerse themselves in after the study day is done.

Things to do in Herning

Art and Culture

An intriguing architectural feat consisting of alarming angles and soothing curves in glaring white, HEART presents some of the biggest contemporary artists and boasts a library, concert hall and café – this innovative forum is an invaluable resource for students. Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum is another edifice of Herning’s dynamic art scene that trades in tradition for unconventionality. The gallery features 4000 works by the artist couple and represents a jarring architectural consternation that is an attraction within itself, offsetting the grey Danish landscape with colorful ceramics.

Sights and monuments

A distinctive yellow mansion dating from 1579, Herningsholm once played an important role in the Midtjylland textile industry and today acts as a museum to the legacy of Herning. It also commemorates the life and work of Steen Steensen Blicher, through who’s writing the moorland spirit of Danish romanticism flows. Herning is also home to Ingvar Cronhammar’s monumental work, Elia – a spherical 60 meter-diameter dome with four columns resembling smokestacks of a mid-century factory. Whether Elia is a shadowy tribute to industrial design or an abstract vision of Hell (random blasts of flame emanate from the towers), this ominous feature is truly unique.

Entertainment and recreation

Beyond its art scene, Herning is renowned for its events. Messecenter Herning (MCH) is a buzzing cultural resource and entertainment complex that unfailingly draws young people and students – this home of recreation outdoes even the Bella Center in Copenhagen. For something entirely different, try Kultur Fabrikken (Culture Factory). This is a sports center with a twist – they offer a parkour area, a skate park, a ‘fight center’ and a calisthenics area, as well as a café that doubles as a live music venue – yet another example of Herning’s unfailing tendency to think outside of the box.
