Gödöllő is an old town that dates back to the 14th century and played a significant role in Hunagarian history. Between 1901 and 1920, the artists' colony of Hungarian Art Deco was based here. A new chapter in the story of Gödöllő started in 1981 when the "Sándor Petőfi" Cultural Centre was inaugurated with its varied programs, and it soon attained nationwide renown. During this decade, the town center changed a lot. The present town hall was finished in 1986. At the same time, the collection of mechanical machinery of the Agricultural University was opened.
Political changes in the beginning of the 1990s also brought significant improvements to daily life in Gödöllő. The number of industrial and service units in private ownership increased and quickly transformed the appearance of the town. Students coming to study in Gödöllő will enjoy a transitional climate somewhere between the mild, snowy weather of Transdanubia, the variable continental climate and the almost sub-Mediterranean weather of the south.
