The focal point of the town is the Buckingham Old Gaol, about which gorgeous, tree-lined Georgian streetscapes cluster. On Tuesday and Saturday you will find Market Hill and the High Street dominated by Buckingham’s 600 year old market, where you can peruse everything from fresh fruit and veg, fish and bread, to household goods and clothes. Buckingham is home to Britain’s first modern independent university, and the vast majority of its student population are from overseas.

Things to see while studying abroad in Buckingham:

History and Culture: Now a museum chronicling local history, Buckingham Old Gaol is a fortress-like building that for many years served as the town’s police station. Other sites of historical and cultural interest include the beautiful 15th century Buckingham Chantry Chapel, and the impressive Gothic revival church of St Peter and St Paul. Also worth a visit is Waddeson Manor, a grand Neo-Renaissance mansion built in the style of a French chateau, and Stowe House, an equally formidable country domicile and one of the finest examples of Neo-Classical architecture in the UK.

Outdoors and nature: Simply strolling along the River Ouse as it winds its way picturesquely through the town and admiring Buckingham’s charming aesthetic is perhaps the best way to pass a day. However, the Stowe Landscape Gardens are renowned for their magnificence and are also worth a visit.
