Winner of the 2024 Study a Bachelor’s in the USA Scholarship

Meet Diego Martinez, the 2024 winner of the Study a Bachelor's in the USA Scholarship!

Born and raised in Cuba, Diego hopes to discover a cure for cancer or a treatment for some mortal illnesses and apply it to Cuba and the whole world.

Diego's background

Diego is a Cuban student who has been interested in science subjects, specifically math and chemistry, since elementary school. In high school, he started to learn more about chemistry, choosing it as his dream career and preparing himself for national and international chemistry Olympics in the best labs in his country with the best teachers.

Despite the lack of resources and economic problems, those studies, his efforts, and his dedication led him to receive several gold medals in these competitions, including first place in the Central American Chemistry Olympic in 2023.

How he chose the USA as his country of study

A desire to continue researching in the chemistry field made him think about what study options would be better for him after finishing high school. As chemistry requires a lot of conditions and facilities that Cuba cannot offer, he feels the need to study abroad. Then, he thought the USA could help him fulfill his goals, investigate, and obtain enough knowledge to achieve his dream. He is surprised by the country because it's one of the most important countries for nuclear chemistry and health treatments; therefore, he would say that the USA is the soul of chemistry research.

In addition to this, he found out that universities in the USA also provide tons of resources to facilitate the development of chemists, and make them more prepared. He chose McMurry University for his Bachelor's because of the tremendously advanced lab technology and high-level equipment that the university has, where he could practice and learn hands-on techniques. He is also trying to continue his belief in his religion in this university.

How he plans to be a globally-minded leader

First, he hoped to graduate with a degree in chemistry to acquire enough knowledge to continue studying until he earned a Master's degree and a doctoral degree. After that, or during his studies, he would like to do research within healthcare. He sees how this field is still developing because many illnesses in the world don't have a cure, and people are dying because of this.

Discovering a cure for cancer or a treatment for some mortal diseases and being able to apply them in Cuba and the whole world is the dream that he is going to fight for.
