The Master’s Programme in Russian, Eurasian, and Eastern European Studies, MAREEES (previously the Master’s Programme in Russian Studies) will equip you with an in-depth knowledge of historical trajectories, and present and future challenges of countries anchored to an area-specific development.

The Russian Studies programme offers a comprehensive examination of Russian literature, culture, and linguistics through two specialised tracks: Media Linguistics and Literature, Linguistics, Culture. It aims to develop proficient analysts and researchers who are equipped to address contemporary societal needs. Students engage critically with Russian texts of various genres, tackling both theoretical and practical challenges related to the current state of the Russian language, literature, and culture. Graduates are prepared to excel in professional settings and contribute meaningfully to (inter)cultural communication, making them well-suited for diverse roles in academia, media, and cultural institutions.

This program in BA in Slavonic Studies (Russian Philology) Slavic Philology (specialty: Russian Philology) is aimed at training specialists in the field of Russian language and literature. Students will learn how to work with complex texts related to different areas of cultural and social life. The program includes courses in linguistics, history, and theory of literature, Russian culture and art, and regional studies of Russia. The uniqueness of this program lies in the fact that students are also offered a module to study business Russian and business communication. Successful completion of this module enables graduates to be competitive specialists outside the scientific philological profile.

The Eastern European and Russian studies program is devised to provide you with a deep and comprehensive knowledge of the region, including its political, economic, and cultural particularities, and to develop the academic and analytical skills that will enable you to analyze, evaluate and assess key political and social processes within this dynamic and exciting region of the world.

Russia and the countries of Eurasia have been and will continue to be, of paramount importance to U.S. national interests. You will study the Russian language, spoken worldwide by some 250 million people, while also acquiring a foundational knowledge of the history, culture, literature, politics, sociology, economics, and geography of the region. Mason’s degree program is notably flexible, enabling you to focus your interests on one of three concentrations: Russian Studies, Russian Language and Culture, and Eurasia Studies.
