This highly practical course is varied, exciting, and demanding. The course is designed to encourage you to develop skills, creativity, imagination, and independence based on personal experience, taught skills, and critical understanding. You will explore, experiment, research, and acquire and develop your skills, knowledge, and understanding in a range of textiles media. You can develop your portfolio in garment/fashion/costume, accessories, textiles, interiors/soft furnishings, printed/dyed textiles, constructed textiles, textile installation, expressive/fine art textiles, and digital textiles.

If you're looking to study fashion and textiles at degree-level, but have already achieved A Levels, this preparatory art and design course will help you build a strong portfolio of work you can use for your university application. You will get an opportunity to try many aspects of art and design within the textiles with fashion pathway. The broad experience and skills you acquire on this course will help you to explore your own potential. You will study contemporary art theory and practice, and will learn traditional skills combined with conceptual and innovative techniques. These will include skills in textiles, fashion illustration, drawing, colourwork, design development and presentation.

This course is based on textiles and fashion as an art form. Enthusiasm, creativity, originality and self-discipline are all important attributes required. Commitment outside of lessons is crucial to success. You will be set regular independent work which will take the form of practical work, research and written work on artists, designers and craftspeople. This course will enable you to produce an incredibly varied and experimental portfolio of work based on a range of chosen starting points.

A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4+/C+ or above, including English Language and an Art & Design subject. Those who have not studied a GCSE Art & Design subject must be able to demonstrate interest and ability through a visual portfolio that may include work in a variety of media, as well as observational drawing.

This course will give a strong understanding of the essential elements of Fashion and Textile Design including techniques and materials, concepts and influences, visual recording and communication. You will produce garments and textile designs, which will be presented on the catwalk and in exhibitions.

This course is taught by Emily Younger, who established Folklore Children Clothing. Emily has lots of experience working with textiles and is our sewing machine expert. Using our sewing machines, you will not only be shown how to do the basics, but you will also progress onto different techniques.

This course covers all the skills involved in making a garment from a commercial pattern including putting in a zip, waistbands and pockets. Students will be required to buy a pattern and fabric for either a skirt or pair of trousers of their choice and will be guided through how to adjust their chosen garment to fit themselves. Advice on the style of patterns and fabric will be given in the first session by a well-qualified and experienced tutor.

This course is an introduction to the mysteries of underwired bra creation. We will guide you through the bra pattern-making process to adapt useable patterns for your unique fit and style.

Fashion impacts all aspects of our lives and shapes our appreciation and understanding of the world around us. This course focuses on developing creativity and innovation within an industrial and commercial context. You’ll learn vital pattern-cutting skills in 2D and 3D as well as core manufacturing abilities. You’ll also enhance your freehand and technical drawing and illustration skills using traditional and computer-aided design methods. As well as technical skills, you’ll explore the history of fashion and exciting innovations in contemporary design. Fascinating study trips, fashion shows, exhibitions and competitions will enrich your educational experience, while live industry projects could lead to your designs going into production and open up employment opportunities.
