The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Southwest University is committed to excellence in education, demonstrated by providing a comprehensive program to students. The program supports the vision, values, and mission of Southwest University by striving to be the premier diagnostic medical sonography training program in our community.

Sonographers are highly skilled professionals who use imaging equipment that non-invasively emits sound waves directed toward internal organs, blood vessels, tissues, and other structures. They can work in hospitals, clinics, or private practices and help physicians gather the data needed to reach diagnostic decisions. This full-time (21 months long) program leads to an Associate of Applied Sciences degree with a specialization in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS). Training includes classroom and laboratory instruction, as well as clinical education in an affiliated ultrasound department.

This accredited program prepares you to use ultrasound machines and other specialized equipment to perform diagnostic exams on patients. You’ll study normal and abnormal anatomy, the pathophysiology of the abdomen, small body parts, OB/GYN and vascular structures.

This program is commonly referred to as "Echo". Echocardiography technologists use sophisticated computers and cutting-edge technology to create and read sound waves in order to capture videos and images of the heart. These ultrasounds allow us to see into the body without pain or radiation so cardiologists can evaluate the function of the heart and plan possible treatment.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) is a branch of diagnostic medical imaging. DMS, also called ultrasonography or sonography, is a diagnostic medical procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to produce dynamic visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body. Sonography is a radiation-free imaging modality. The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program (DMS) provides the knowledge that will enable students to enter the workforce as entry-level sonographers. The program includes didactic, directed hands-on laboratory and professionally supervised clinical training in general sonography (defined as the abdomen, obstetric, gynecologic, superficial organs, and other appropriate areas).

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College is a two year Associate in Applied Science Degree program. A new DMS class is selected each year to begin the program in the fall semester.
