1557 Natural Sciences Preparatory Programs

In this course, we will explore the diverse marine ecosystems of the Pacific side of Costa Rica through immersive field studies, we will focus on rocky reef ecology, mangrove ecosystems, intertidal zone ecology, plankton ecology, marine biodiversity, conservation practices, local fishing, and the role of genetics in marine conservation.

The Foundation Course is a study program, taught in English and primarily aimed at candidates who do not possess the minimum schooling requirements outlined in current legislation for enrolment at Italian universities. Attendance of the Foundation Course is mandatory and students must accumulate all the credits provided by the course in order to obtain the final qualification. The modules available within the Foundation Course are taught in English and a Foundation Course in Science prepares students interested in studying a degree program in Medicine, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Maths, Natural Sciences, Pharmacy, and Physics.

This program is designed for students who desire a broad knowledge of liberal arts and sciences, plus additional coursework in an "Area of Emphasis." This program would be an ideal choice for students planning on transferring to the California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC), as the student may satisfy their general education requirements plus focus on transferable course work relating to baccalaureate majors at these institutions.

The Natural Sciences represent a branch of science with multiple paths that deals with the physical world, including physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and astronomy. The Associate in Science degree in Natural Sciences will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the Major course requirements and the General Education requirements.

An emphasis on Natural Sciences provides the student with an understanding of living and non-living systems and promotes an appreciation of the methodologies and tools of science. Students may select courses that focus on a specific major and then select complementary courses to strengthen their selected focus or they may select courses that strengthen and broaden their overall understanding of the Natural Sciences.

The Associate of Arts Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Natural Sciences and Mathematics requires completion of 64 credits which must include the General Education Core plus 18 ± 24 credits in Science and/or Mathematics courses taken from subjects in the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. This degree provides a solid liberal arts foundation accompanied by strong preparation in Science and Math. Completion of this degree prepares students to continue in multiple science baccalaureate programs as well as programs in health sciences.

Study the effects of natural processes and their interactions with the physical world in this two-year associate program intended to ready you for a transfer to a four-year institution. The Direct Transfer Agreement degree prepares students for upper-division study in the areas of biological sciences, environmental/resource sciences, chemistry, geology, and earth science. 

The Associate in Science in Biological Sciences is designed for students interested in acquiring a solid foundation in basic biology, evolutionary theory, and the scientific method. This program is appropriate for students seeking entry-level positions in the life sciences.

These courses emphasize the natural sciences, which examine the physical universe, its life forms, and its natural phenomena. Math courses emphasize mathematical, analytical, and reasoning skills beyond the level of intermediate algebra. Science courses emphasize an understanding of the process of science and the scientific method. Courses emphasize the use of mathematics and science as investigative tools, the role of mathematics and science as part of human civilization and society, and the inherent value of inductive and deductive reasoning as part of the human experience.

Biology courses satisfy the physical and life sciences requirements for transfer into four-year colleges and universities in majors other than biology and health science, and they satisfy the natural science requirement for an AA degree. You may also take biology courses to meet continuing education requirements in the health professions, or for personal interest.

A major in Biological Sciences is a preparation for advanced academic work, for careers in civil service, industry, or teaching; as a background for professional training in such fields as biological science education, biotechnology, nursing, public health, environmental health, pre-medicine and all related areas of biology.

The Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Natural Science and Mathematics provides students the opportunity to develop knowledge of scientific theories, concepts, and data about living and nonliving systems. Students will achieve an understanding and appreciation of scientific principles and the scientific method, as well as the potential limits of scientific endeavors and the value systems and ethics associated with human inquiry. In addition, students shall develop skills and understanding beyond the level of intermediate algebra. Students will not just practice computational skills but will be able to explain and apply basic mathematical concepts and will be able to solve problems through quantitative reasoning.
