Marine Maintenance Technology (MT) prepares students for employment in the marine trades with a focus on two major disciplines: marine mechanics and marine electrical systems. The MT program offers one-year certificates in each of these high demand areas and a two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree for those who complete coursework in both fields. 

The global shipping industry never stands still, and this is also true for technology. New technological demands with regard to ship safety, navigation, risk management and energy efficiency mean new requirements for increasingly skilled and technically knowledgeable professionals to understand and carry out these demands. This course develops a detailed understanding of ship technology and the role it plays in shipping.

The Certificate in Marine Surveying Fundamentals aims to expand the knowledge of existing and potential marine surveyors in the marine survey industry. Over 12 weeks and 6 modules, this distance learning programme will explore the human element of conducting opening meetings, dealing with obstructive and difficult clients/officers/crew, the safety of surveyors, the extent of authority and professional conduct.

The Diploma in Harbour Masters provides the underpinning knowledge to enable the present and future harbour masters, and their staff, to meet the key role in managing the marine safety functions of a port or harbour. As the first professional development course for Harbour Masters (and their staff), this thorough 12-month programme aims to provide the knowledge needed for the role in support of “on-the-job” training.

The Marine Technology curriculum is designed to provide the practical skills and academic background essential for success in the area of marine scientific support.

The 12-week Certificate in Shipyard and Boatyard Management delivers the essential knowledge and expertise required to successfully manage shipyards and boatyards effectively. An effective introduction to the management of shipyards and boatyards

The 14-week Certificate in Alternative Fuels course offers a close look at a range of new fuel alternatives – including LPG, methanol, hydrogen, biofuels, ammonia, nuclear and renewable energy – that will not only meet existing and possible future restrictions but can also be used to drive efficiency, minimise costs and reduce environmental impacts.

A certificate of achievement as a Marine Diving Technician certifies professional commercial divers for employment under ANSI/ACDE-01-1998 industry standards. The training curriculum includes instruction in all phases of commercial diving, hyperbaric medicine, bell/saturation diving emergency medicine, and remote-operated vehicles (ROVs) to name but a few. Teamwork and Safety are the prime emphases of marine technician training. Students completing the certificate program receive industry certifications which are required for employment. Students completing the full certificate program have the option to seek employment in the marine industry or combine their completed coursework toward an Associate in Science degree in Marine Technology at SBCC.

Marine pollution is one of the great challenges facing humanity given the situation that has developed in recent years. This problem is causing great inconveniences on the marine environment and its natural resources, so that the flora and fauna on which the human being lives and that part of natural functioning that allows life in the oceans, its self-regulation is especially affected. And maintenance. Therefore, in this course we will address the main pollution routes that affect the oceans such as land discharges, marine litter, pollution by hydrocarbons, heavy metals or excess nutrients. In addition, we will also study the environmental impact of marine pollution, its effect on ecosystems, as well as existing regulations and prevention measures to mitigate its effects.

Marine Diesel Mechanics are engine specialists. They have expert knowledge of electrical and engine systems in diesel-powered marine vessels and equipment. You’ll learn how to install, repair and maintain major mechanical components of commercial machinery.

Our Graduate Diploma in Marine and Antarctic Science provides you with a solid coursework grounding in your chosen area of specialisation and provides a pathway to move onto our Master of Marine and Antarctic Science.

Prepare for a career in recreational equipment repair in our dual-track Boat and Watercraft Technician program. Through classroom and lab experience, you will develop competence in repairing the most modern recreational equipment—Master the skills needed to pursue a career in marine engine technology.

This introductory course addresses the fundamentals of marine propulsion prime-movers, propulsion systems, and associated auxiliary machinery and systems.

The Associate in Occupational Science (A.O.S.) degree program offers core training in the practical aspects of construction and repair of equipment and structures built with steel.

The training to become an ordinary seaman consists of the voyage onboard the Training Ship DANMARK and craftsmanship workshop training ashore at MARTEC in Frederikshavn, Denmark. After completing the training and 12 months of seagoing service, the path is cleared to apply to a navigation school or 20 weeks finishing course at MARTEC that brings a certificate as an able-bodied seaman.
