Using modern methods of linguistic instruction, this course is designed to provide you with a sufficient knowledge of Biblical Hebrew grammar, syntax, and vocabulary to read Biblical prose with the aid of a dictionary. Intended for beginners who are students of Hebrew, the Bible, or theology, this course is approximately equivalent in scope to a first-year university course in Biblical Hebrew.

How and when did Jerusalem become a holy city, and why was it sanctified by the three Abrahamic religions? What can archaeology tell us about the daily life in Jerusalem two thousand years ago and how did its ancient inhabitants provide water to their city? In this course, you will survey the archaeological sites of Jerusalem, from Biblical times through the Middle Ages and to the present. Tracing the history of Jerusalem by uncovering its buried past, this course provides an extensive archaeological survey of Jerusalem as the center of three major world religions.

This course explores the emergence of Zionism and the Israeli state from the late nineteenth century until today by looking at some of the foundational movements and moments in Israeli history. Themes you’ll explore include the attempt to create a secular Jewish identity in the form of the New Jew/Sabra, expressions of alienation and discrimination, the perceived ethnic gap, and religious-secular tensions in Israeli society, and Jewish-Arab tensions. In addition, you will learn about the evolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict and its impact upon Israeli society. The course will conclude with an examination of the so-called judicial upheaval and the latest round of confrontation in the region.

This course examines the Arab-Israeli conflict in the context of current theories and practices of conflict resolution. Focusing on Israeli society, you’ll gain a broad perspective on this conflict, including academic research and practical experience related to one of the most influential conflicts of our time.

This course offers an in-depth exploration of the events and repercussions of October 7th, focusing on terrorism, counter-terrorism policies, Israel’s historical and contemporary responses, and the broader international context. Through lectures, discussions, and guest speakers, participants will gain tools for understanding and discussing the complex impact of these events on both national and global levels.

This course presents both an introduction to the basic principles of Jewish mysticism, as well as the way in which Kabbalah and Jewish spirituality has entered diverse forms of contemporary spirituality, new-age thought, religious cross-fertilization, art, cinema, and even politics.

This program provides you with a broad picture of the latest developments in the trauma field, contextualized by the Israeli experience. Together, we will focus on the consequences of and coping with psychological trauma; theoretical concepts and applications of resilience; community preparedness for terrorism and disaster; developmental and gender aspects of children and trauma; and clinical interventions.
