9 German Studies Preparatory Programs

The Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS) is an intensive, academic program through which students can earn credits that may be counted towards their degrees at their home institutions. Our winter sessions run for three weeks and take place in January.

German Studies is the interdisciplinary study of the contemporary cultural, social, economic, and political life of German speakers in their historical and international contexts. The German faculty of Pomona College and Scripps College offer a single unified and comprehensive curriculum for language, literature, and cultural studies courses. The German Studies Program offers as degree options both a major and a minor in German Studies.

Welcome to German Studies at Trinity College! We are a small team of dedicated teachers and scholars ready to help you develop your German language skills. Together we explore German literature — in original German and in translation — and study a broad array of subjects in which the influences and contributions of German-speaking peoples are evident: history, philosophy, religion, art history, performing arts, music, politics, and economics. German Studies at Trinity is truly interdisciplinary.

The German Studies concentration considers the language, history, cultures, art, and philosophy of the German-speaking people. We encourage students to approach this concentration from an interdivisional point of view and to select relevant courses in the arts and in social studies, in addition to the required courses. This is especially desirable if a student is already familiar with German before coming to Simon's Rock. Students who elect the German Studies concentration typically enroll at an institution of higher learning in one of the German-speaking countries: Bard College in Berlin offers an opportunity to take some classes in English while being immersed in a German-speaking environment and receiving formal instruction in the German language.

At Mount Allison, German Studies consists of courses in language, literature and culture. Courses are designed to impart a good working knowledge of German*, with a particular emphasis on representative authors and movements in order to provide students access to the literary traditions as a whole.

Language is not only key to accessing a deep understanding of a culture and its people, it is fundamental to understanding the world and your relationship to it. Through the study and research of German, you will immerse yourself both on campus and abroad in the significance of Europe’s most widely-spoken first language. An integral part of a globally informed curriculum, language studies will give you the ability to articulate ideas and communicate with confidence across intellectual disciplines and geographical boundaries.

Students in the department develop a broad understanding of German or Russian cultures through courses that emphasize history, literature, politics, film, and language. Many choose to enhance their experience by studying abroad or through internships, while others work with faculty on collaborative research projects.
