This free online course will help you understand the concept of geographic information systems. You will learn about how to represent data in the real world, and how we can use GIS to achieve this. You will be informed on how data flows, the different databases, and models, and the various opportunities available in the GIS field. You will also learn the various analyses that can be done on data collected and the software used in mastering GIS tools.

If you’re intrigued by these questions, consider majoring in Geography. Geographers study how human society and culture interact with the physical environment. They explore what we build, where we build, and why.

Geography majors develop knowledge of international culture, environment, geoscience, history and politics while building critical thinking, analytical reasoning and practical problem-solving skills useful in a broad range of careers in today's complex, interconnected world. Completion of the Associate of Arts in Geography Degree for Transfer (Geography ADT) will prepare you to meet minimum lower division admission requirements (60 transferable units) for transfer to a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC). Some UC schools may require additional coursework, so please meet with a counselor for further assistance. The Geography program map below includes all of the major coursework and recommended General Education courses by term that are needed to fulfill the degree and transfer requirements at a CSU.

The Associate in Arts for Transfer Degree in Geography focuses on the world’s physical and social processes. While Geography majors may go on to specialize in a specific area of Geography, the AAT provides students with a foundational understanding of the main systems and processes that interact to produce and maintain our physical and social world, as well as the tools to study them, including GIS (Geographic Information Systems).

An Associate in Arts in Geography for Transfer (AA-T) from Skyline College is intended for students who are interested in transferring to a California State University (CSU) campus with a major in Geography, or similar major.
